I would rather look for alternative options than make kid's fight with BC. This will create another form of low business in Alberta. One option could be to find the alternate route through US border from Alberta to Montana. why even go to BC for the pipeline.

  • Barry - 7 years ago

They sure don't mind the money albertans spend in BC. Till they smarten up that's coming to a stop with me. No more going to the okanagan on summer vacations and no more going to valemount or McBride snowmobiling in the winter. And when I buy lumber it will damn sure come from a mill in Alberta!! We don't need to build a pipeline across BC. I'm pretty sure the Americans would be more than happy to put a line in to the port of Seattle or Alaska. What it would cost us to export that way we would make up the difference NOT selling our oil to BC at a discounted price. Nottley is to stupid to figure that out. I'm an officer with the Alberta Independence Party we are going to give this province back to the people !!

  • Mary - 7 years ago

Why is Notley not taking Don Getty's approach. He stopped signing permits to send gas to Ontario when they had a disagreement about a refinery. Ontario's premier soon called Getty saying they needed to talk when Ontario was running out of gas. Getty just sat back and waited. If BC gets their oil from somewhere else, how are they going to get it? By tankers? Wouldn't that be worse for the environment because their would be a lot more of them? Someone needs to look at the bigger picture.

  • Cor - 7 years ago

Wow, nice job dividing our provinces!!! I live in BC and support the pipeline. BC is asking for safety measures and disaster plans to be in place PRIOR to the pipeline being put in place. Alberta would do the same.... Grow up and look for a solution not a province divider!

  • Dan Duran - 7 years ago

There's no perfect way to retaliate, so no use pointing out that a few Albertans will get hurt also. By not allowing the pipeline, some BC-ers are also hurt. That's what a trade war is, but we cannot let one side fire all the shots. The thing is, many in the rest of Canada will agree with Alberta on this issue and we may start to avoid BC products. Look, if your government doesn't like Canada, we don't like them either.

  • nancy - 7 years ago

omgawd... this is exactly what the center of this country wants...no...the west needs to stick together and learn to make things work.... maybe it's the Liberal way of getting the tail to wag the dog... The bitumen and oil needs to move, the western provinces need the economy, the people need the jobs...let's not have it go East and let Quebec have any say...let's make the West strong!!!!

  • Jane - 7 years ago

Terrible idea to ban BC wine. This hurts far to many Albertan's who work in the importing industry, restaurant industry, etc. What a childish thing to do. FIND ANOTHER WAY. I personally know people who specifically import only BC wine into Alberta, what will happen to them? Guess they'll be sleeping on my couch soon.

  • Joe - 7 years ago

This is like when the US boycotted French wine when France wouldn't support their destruction of Iraq. Way to emulate those idiots! Enjoy your freedom fries, children.

  • Carol - 7 years ago

They should ban it in all cities

  • Donny - 7 years ago

I guess we in BC will have to buy our wine instead beer

  • Stevan - 7 years ago

I think all the people and their comments of shutting the boarder down to make them pay an eye for eye did not have enough discipline when they were kids, same thing applies to political leaders doing the same exact thing some of you are! This is not an issue to hurt each other on, this is not a way kids now should be learning how these so call it adults handle things, grow up and work together!

  • Garrett Cummings - 7 years ago

To all the Alberta clowns who are commenting that you should shut your borders to bc trucks and put tariffs on bc lumber how about we just stop any shipments of anything going to Alberta through are coast ? Then see how much you pay for stuff being shipped from the East !!! I work in the patch and I live in the heart of the okanagan and I believe both sides are wrong and need to work together to find a solution hey maybe they can even create more jobs for both sides in doing so ? But hearing rude comments like that make me wanna slap people upside the thing that holds their simple little minds you should do Canada a favor and go play in the Deerfoot or the Henday or Hwy 63

  • Jeff C - 7 years ago

The absolute void of leadership in this Country, at all levels of govt, has now resulted in Canadians in-fighting over wine and gender pronouns as we shun and marginalize true wealth building industries.

    A sad state for all.

  • JB - 7 years ago

I applaud the Alberta ban on BC wines. It should also consider stopping the transport of other goods from BC across Alberta if the BC gov. doesn't allow the pipeline expansion. Port of Vancouver receives goods and materials from around the Pacific Rim. Many port and transportation related jobs would be affected in BC. Guess the BC gov. didn't think about the law of unintended consequences.

  • Angela - 7 years ago

Hmmmm......i thought we lived in a free country. Maybe I'll just move to bc and pay my taxes to them so I have the freedom to choose which wine I like to drink. And yes what about our cattle and wheat? Rachel give your head a shake.....we are all Canadian and should work together as part of all peoplekind

  • Nadine Chalifoux - 7 years ago

Rachel Notley should not be making decisions for businesses in Alberta. It's fine to make a decision about our income as Alberta on a whole but don't deprive our own businesses from using products we chose thought you but us to work with. There is no consideration by Rachel Notley nor is there any common sense in her decision. She is going to make a province suffer more and proof that she is definitely not capable of running our province. She has now isolated herself and the NDP government. There is no reality in this decision. If anything maybe the Canadian government should step in and tell her Rachel Notley you need to smarten up! And perhaps they should tell her time is up you need to maybe step down from your role.

  • Spiderman - 7 years ago

Not a problem. Alberta prefers brown bag wine anyway. More for us in B.C.

  • Andy - 7 years ago

Alberta bans BC wine, they ban Alberta beef. Alberta bans BC apples, they ban Alberta wheat. While I don’t necessarily disagree with getting a little tough with the left coasters, where does it end? Be nice if BC would just comply with the pipeline ruling.

  • Ally - 7 years ago

BC may have thrown a road block down for the time being however they haven’t said NO to the thought entirely, rather simply stated that they would like to reassure their province that in the case of a spill or other detrimental occurrence that they are protected properly in regards to both the environment and people. Since when did we as Albertans become so pretentious that we can’t see what would equally unnerve us; someone trying to impose SOMETHING into our province without the time to properly be aware of all cautionaries? So what if BC doesn’t just say “OK” to installing a potential harmful oil line through their province. THEY CARE more so because of the past spills that have made headlines due to the after math. So is it not important that they justify themselves with time to do research and have safety precautions put in place? This is a matter of politicians that should be dealing on a level of upmost decency rather than disrespecting a province for giving a damn. BC WINES HAVE NO MATTER IN THIS. They should not be caught up in the drama because proud NDP PRO OIL EVERYTHING is getting upset. It just proves that although some of us look like adults we don’t necessarily act like it. This will start a domino effect across Canada and could leak into import/export(s). Disallowing BC wines only states we are ran by childish minds. There are bigger topics at large and this is what we’ve lowered ourselves too?? Honestly.

  • Pat - 7 years ago

Hmm it seems Notley is being naughty. Threats and Black Mail don't look good on those who hold public office! What kind of example are you setting for young people to follow? I'd certainly tell my kids not to be like that!
She has NO authority in BC so she is certainly wasting her time. We did NOT elect you to govern us!! She needs to work on diversifying the economy for you do have authority to do that in Alberta, but you certainly wouldn't wish to spend anytime cleaning up or having any concern over our Vancouver waters and coastline being coated with bitumen! Not you won't have to be living in it! I'm sure you won't want to see the dead fish, the orkas, seals, and all the other wildlife washing up coated in oil and dead on our shores! Of ALL the ideas that have ever been presented this oil thru Vancouver is by far the MOST BONEHEADED ONE!!!

  • Brian2 - 7 years ago

I just checked. The primary wine producing region in BC is the Okanagan valley. Every provincial riding there went to the previous Liberal government in the 2017 election. So the industry getting hurt is not in NDP territory. When push comes to shove what do you think the odds are that Horgan will support his wine industry over his socialist and greenie constituency?
There's a huge wine market south of the 49th parallel. I understand that there may be restrictions on BC wines in Washington and California, but the USA is much larger than those two states. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I suggest that US wine distributors would be happy to gobble up Alberta's current share of BC wine production.
Ms. Notley's approach is backwards. She needs to be dealing government to government, especially the Federal government. She should be talking to the aboriginal bands along the pipeline route, a large majority of whom support the pipeline. She should be calling Trudeau's office every day. She should be in Toronto on all the TV networks and talk shows boosting the benefits to Canada of the KM pipeline. Try to get some help in the BC legislature from the Official Opposition.
Some people may remember the premier of Newfoundland, Danny Williams, who hectored Stephen Harper for months till he won his battle over equalization payments. He even pulled the Canadian flag off provincial buildings as part of his campaign.
Trudeau has said several times that KM is in the national interest. Embarrass him into doing his job Ms. Notley, not pull economic stunts on people who mostly are friends of Alberta.

  • Stevan - 7 years ago

These are child games of he said she said grow up and be an adult, we are all Canadians here. Both NDP leaders should be fired, this is not a game of who can hurt who more, work together as Canadians!

  • Barry - 7 years ago

If feds had any balls they step in now stop BC from doing this crap tell BC stop it now they have power to do it .let pipe line go forward. .

  • Andrew - 7 years ago

Way to go Notley! I would never be a support of any socialist of any stripe but this I support. But you have to keep stepping it up. until all bc registered trucks are stopped at the alberta border.
And how about collecting National Park fees on the BC side. They have been getting a free ride for years.

  • Nick - 7 years ago

This was a bad move and there are some silly misinformed people here. BC has never received a transfer payment, both BC and Alberta have only ever contributed and never received transfer payments. And since BC controls the coast a trade war would affect far more than just beef and oil for Alberta. You people are foolishly falling into a political move to drum up more support via a knee jerk reaction. Way to solidify the opinion that Albertans are Canada's dumb hicks. Calm down children, BC has a right to ensure their environment is protected from permanent damage from an industry that doesn't have all that long left.

  • Helena - 7 years ago

I'll be voting NDP until the day I die. Even after inheriting a crippled economy they have done so much for our social programming, schools, health care, affordable daycare and the new employment rules! And now standing up for Alberta!
We can't just cut them off either. It’s pretty hard to hold someone hostage … when they have a port.

  • John W - 7 years ago

Why stop at banning imports of BC wine? Ban the transportation of these wines ACROSS our province as well.
Also ban imports and transportation of BC lumber products through Alberta.
And every drop of Alberta crude that currently goes through the Kinder Morgan pipeline should be loaded onto tankers and shipped overseas. The BC refineries can get their feedstock somewhere else.

  • Erika - 7 years ago

Absolutely the right move! If BC wants to cut Alberta's livelyhood then I see no point in keeping their economy going.

  • Ken Douglas - 7 years ago

Not a great move in my opinion. It will run the risk of alienating the people who live outside the "magic circle" of the lower mainland in B.C. and want the pipeline built. Most of the wine is produced in the interior and most of the people did not vote N.D.P or Green. Shut off all oil and gas to Vancouver for two weeks and lots of us will be with you all the way.

  • John Shawnessey - 7 years ago

Wine this week 100% support, there are over 15,000 wines listed at the AGLC, I am sure you can find another choice, support your fellow Albertans ahead of your taste buds.

Albertans should quit going to BC for Summer vacations, where would the Okanagan, Invermere Valley, Golden area, Nelson/Creston area, etc be without Alberta visitors?

Montana, Saskatchewan Northern lakes are pretty nice, there is always an alternative.

Maybe make their gasoline more scarse, hit these environmentalists driving cars and westphelia campers in their wallets.

Alberta is hurting and the Government of BC does not give a Sh-t! We need to get our bitumen to the coast to sell it overseas.

Nice Patriotic BC Premier pandering to the one Green Party seat the is the glue holding this fragile minority coalition government together. Basically one Green party MLA is controlling the pipe line which is a game changer that affects 3,500,000 Albertans and the Canadian economic benefits. What is wrong with this scenario.
Where is the Prime Minister Justin Trudope? Thinking of his July 1 obsession, with his poorly thought out plan...Nice leader?!? He should of taken a hard line on BC position long ago, he let this fester, now it is a full on infection.

  • Mark Allen - 7 years ago

I will cancel our annual 2 week vacation in Penticton and area tomorrow. Our dollars will now go to the resorts in Idaho. Spread the word and boycott all things BC!

  • Irv - 7 years ago

While a response was definitely needed, wouldn't it be more appropriate to just stop selling our oil & gas to BC? This boycott will hurt one segment of the BC economy - $3.00 per liter wouldl get everyone's attention!

  • Kevin - 7 years ago

It doesn't go far enough. Ban the transport through the province to other provinces the same way they want to block our oil getting to markets through theirs.

  • Anita - 7 years ago

First of all I love BC wines but if BC politicians wanna play like that it is most likely that the rational debate process isn't going to work. Meanwhile our economy and the economy of Canada suffers. I applaud Notely, which is hard for me as a long time, big C Conservative. She's right, being professional and maintaining civility has not gained anything for Alberta. Maybe, just maybe this is a strategy Trudeau should take with NAFTA negotiations.

  • Susan walker - 7 years ago

Omg ms notley. Do you not realize that over half of the citizens off British Columbia voted against the current socialist government. A huge percentage of wine producers are liberal supporters (as well as orchardists), and they are all in favor of the pipeline . We support the citizens of Alberta, our neighbors, and and ask the same. You are just proving that yhe NDP's are all tarred with the same brush!

  • Simon Le bon - 7 years ago

Where is the leadership in this country to allow this to happen between provinces

  • Christina - 7 years ago

Why hurt the wine industry. They are not in this fight? Cut off Alberta oil and gas resources to BC. Notley wouldn't even be supporting Alberta oil and gas if she wasn't on the chopping block next election. NOT a well thought out move.

  • Liz - 7 years ago

We need to boycott Alberta beef then! We are just doing what is necessary to ensure our coastline is protected! Since we have the ports, we could also stop the transfer of goods that Alberta has ordered.

  • Phil - 7 years ago

Stop transporting B.C. natural gas through Alberta. As well, shut the existing pipeline down for about a month to do "environmental inspection" on it, and watch the lower mainland grind to a halt. Side benefit: Vancouver Int'l airport would shut down too due to a shortage of jet fuel. If they don't want Kinder Morgan, show them the impact.

  • Burt - 7 years ago

Don't hurt the wine producers - hurt the BC Gov. by stopping transfer Payments. Our Federal Gov. should be stepping up and reducing these transfer payments based upon the amount that is generated by oil. If our Oil is too dirty then so should be the revenue that generates our Transfer payments to any & all jurisdictions (eg. BC or Quebec (mayor of Montreal) . How is it ok for ANY jurisdiction in Canada think it is ok to import oil (tankers bring it in - think about it) but not support Alberta that helps reduce taxes, pay for Healthcare , Education etc for ALL Canadians through these Transfer Payments.

  • Doug - 7 years ago

First of all Notley is only fighting for the oil industry now because her political life hangs in the balance. Shortly after the new B.C. Premier was elected he & Notley met & by their own admission the issue of pipelines never came up. With his government hanging by a thread supported by the Green Party it was obvious this would become an issue but she chose not try to get ahead of it. As far as the ban on wine I fully support that measure but why stop there ? Every day B.C. exports power to the U.S. on transmission lines that run through southwestern Alberta. Let's have a cut of that as well. Every year the logging industry harvests thousands of trees & hauls them to B.C. to be processed. Let's throw a crippling export tariff onto those trees, they shouldn't be leaving Alberta anyway. No doubt there are many fair minded people in B.C. who punitive measures will adversely affect & that is a shame. But they elected their government not us. The intention of the B.C. Premier is to cripple Alberta financially & we should spare no effort in returning that sentiment. Sometimes when you mess with the bull you get the horn.

  • Elfrieda Heiden - 7 years ago

If Alberta had a coastline like B.C. we would want to protect it too. Why can’t we work together with B.C. to help solve their concerns? Targeting the wine industry is just plain dirty.

  • Dale - 7 years ago

The wine ban hurts the people who support us ( Albertans ) in BC. Stop sending refine gasoline and diesel
fuel down the pipeline to the lower mainland. They do not want a pipeline therefore they do not want
Gasoline and diesel fuel. Let’s see how long they can continue to drive and get around without fuel.

  • Julie - 7 years ago

Regardless of what notley does regarding sending a message to the people and government of BC, when they attack my livelihood I will attack theirs and I will NOT supporting anything that come east from BC until they get in step with what is good for all Canadians. If they feel their farmers are taking a hit, well that’s to bad, they can drink their wine and whine about it to the NDP / Green self imploding government!

  • Antonio - 7 years ago

    Let’s ban Alberta’s beef!

  • Jim Dartnell - 7 years ago

I like the idea that one poster suggested. Turn off the energy tap. Somehow all of those "green environmentalists " seem to arrive at the protests all driving cars..... Yet protesting the sale of energy...! Ha! As for the small store owner who was complaining, Hey, Sell the customers a bottle of Ontario, American, French or Australian wine! I for one would gladly switch on the spot to send BC a message....

  • Don Adair - 7 years ago

Totally agree. Give BC NDP a week to reconsider then turn off the natural gas imports into Alberta, which flow throw Alberta pipelines to the US, another week and turn off the lumber imports. Enough is enough. A minority government that only has authority and control by relying on a single Green Party vote for a majority is on a very thin thread at best. Better yet, BC, call an election to verify that you actually have support.

  • Chris - 7 years ago

Are we all 12 years old? Adults not playing nice in a sandbox! Did we like it when Saskatchewan banned vehicles with Alberta plates in their province? Many consumers Enjoy BC wines and go to eating places that serve it. This could have a negative impact on our Alberta restaurant industry. Cost incurred to Change menus and replace product. It's not high school. GROW UP.

  • Brent - 7 years ago

Green Party wants us to get with the program. Let’s do it. Stop oil and gas shipments to BC. 90 % of the their fuel comes out of that pipeline. Kinder Morgan also pipes jet fuel to the Vancouver airport. Imagine what would happen if Alberta stopped shipping gasoline or crude to be refined. Car free streets, no flights, they would all be so happy!

  • Keely - 7 years ago

Holy doodle! Sour grapes, Rachel? I know an election is looming but this is not the way to sway conservative voters. Why on earth would the provincial government threaten small Canadian busineses in favour of a corporate pipeline?! Exceptionally disappointed in the Alberta government. This sounds like a Klein brainchild whilst flying circles around Calgary with his drinking buddies on a private jet. Geeeeeeeeeez.

  • BJ - 7 years ago

No, wrong approach. You are hurting the the wine farmers. Using them as political fodder.

  • Phyllis - 7 years ago

Shut the gas off. Think it would have far better results than shutting out the wine.

  • Greg - 7 years ago

People are saying this is not fair because it will hurt small businesses. BC’s decision is hurting young Alberta families of people who are unemployed because we can’t get our oil to tide water. Feel some of our pain.

  • Kevin - 7 years ago

Support this decision 100%. They are hurting our economy so we hurt theirs. Eye for an eye. If there is any other way I can boycott their province I am all for it. All my family lives out there but so be it.

  • Yvonne Oliver - 7 years ago

This simply shows that Notley has no real idea how importantour oil & gas industry is to our economy! Does she really think boycotting BC wines will make B.C. wake up? She needs to jack up their gas prices to show them just how much they consume and how expensive it gets when they don't get the Alberta friends & family discount!

  • Grant Kanigan - 7 years ago

There should be some type of response, ideally the Alberta Government could find something that embodies the “when they go low, we go high,” school of thought. However, a knee jerk reaction like this just makes everyone look bad.

  • Hayden - 7 years ago

    10/10 would recommend this decision!!

  • Tara - 7 years ago

Ridiculous. BC has some of the best wine in the world. Find another way to talk shop and deal with the issue at hand.

  • Norm - 7 years ago

Several thousand BC workers commute to jobs in Alberta oil patch. They pay BC taxes. Maybe Notley should stop exporting Alberta jobs to BC.

  • Brian - 7 years ago

We need to stop employing out of province workers
