speaking of not running full schedules, but great drivers. what about Cale Yarborough, Tim Richmond, and another that was taken too early in life, Davey Allison. You can't even put Johnson in the same category as these guys.. I seen a incar camera from 1986 Cale at Darlington with no power steering back then. put a camera in todays car, no comparison.. You could also put DW and a couple others on that alltime list along with Richmond, Yarborough, Allison.. these guys had to wheel the car with a lap belt and bench seats in the early days.

richard petty the best just by the amount of races he won.jimmy johnson never won a championship, just the chase and in some cases, you just had to win only one race.

I think it would be a tie between Petty and Earnhardt because of the circumstances and era of when they raced. I think if you put Johnson in a car back in the 70's,80's and early 90's before the cars basically drive themselves now with the packages on the cars, could he truly drive a car from back then and win 5 in a row. The way Nascar has changed the points is crazy and has basically given those to him. If it was back to the old points way, he wouldn't have won 5 in a row. Not saying he's not a good driver, but let's put it all into perspective.

    I would add Bill Elliott.

Don’t know how anyone can vote against Richard Petty. The man and his team are legendary in the sport. They even were forced into drag racing for a brief period because of NASCAR. Petty was from an era where many talented drivers could win across all major racing organizations. Surely Petty could have run Formula 1 and won as well.
