Was the L.A. City Council right to pass a boycott of Arizona?

People need to stop comparing enforcing US laws that already exist to Nazi Germany or Apartheid or whatever state policy atrocity you can conjure up. Plain and simple, borders need to secured, immigration laws need to be enforced, immigration process needs to be followed and respected, just like they are in every other country in the world.

There is NO excuse for the border jumping and unlawful behavior the Mexican nationals display. They are not fleeing their country, they are coming here to exploit, send their remittance $$ back to Mexico, and basically are the mules for Mexico's 2nd highest GDP (not to mention the never ending drug trade, and no, they aren't just selling to el gringo, they sell to other Mexican nationals that live here). The Mexican government ENCOURAGES them to come here and bring USDs back home instead of setting up programs to take care of their own poor and destitute.

THEY ARE NOT THE US's OBLIGATION. THEY ARE MEXICO'S RESPONSIBILITY. LA, CA, and the US need to drop the hammer on Mexico and proclaim once and for all, "You need to take care of your own people and your own problems and stop sending them over here. We will protect our own, and you need to protect your own and stop leeching off the US!"

So stop with all this bleeding heart "bad Nazi!" BS. If they were a resourceful, productive, innocuous group, there wouldn't be this uproar. But this particular group is needy, boastful, ungrateful, violent, greedy, uneducated (and not interested in education), and extremely ignorant. ... willfully disregarding US laws and customs. They are a menace to a progressive society and take far more than they contribute. They are the reason we need more police on the street; they are creating the dreaded "police state" everyone fears, and people need to recognize and wise up to this fact and support enforcement of our immigration laws before our country is completely reduced to another Mexico.

I am boycotting the city of LA. I am embarrassed to admit I live in a city that supports illegal anything!
Here is my letter that I am sending to the President...do not misunderstand, I am NOT prejudiced, I feel the exact same way about illegals from ANY country!

    Dear President Obama,

I'm planning to move my family and extended family into Mexico for my
health, and I would like to ask you to assist me.

We're planning to simply walk across the border from the U.S. into
Mexico, and we'll need your help to make a few arrangements.

We plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration
    laws, etc.

I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do here. So, would you
mind telling your buddy, President Calderon, that I'm on my way over?

Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:

    1. Free medical care for my entire family.

    2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need,
whether I use them or not.

    3. Please print all Mexican government forms in English.

    4. I want my grandkids to be taught Spanish by English-speaking
    (bi-lingual) teachers.

    5. Tell their schools they need to include classes on American culture and
    history.

    6. I want my grandkids to see the American flag on one of the flag poles
    at their school.

    7. Please plan to feed my grandkids at school for both breakfast and lunch.

    8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy access
    to government services.

    9. I do plan to get a car and drive in Mexico but I don't plan to purchase
car insurance, and I probably won't make any special effort to learn local
    traffic laws.

    10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from
their president to leave me alone, please be sure that every patrol car
has at least one English-speaking officer.

    11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put U. S. flag decals
on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any
complaints or negative comments from the locals.

    12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, or have
any labor or tax laws enforced on any business I may start.

    13. Please have the president tell all the Mexican people to be extremely
nice and never say critical things about me or my family, or about the
strain we might place on their economy.

    14. I want to receive free food stamps.

    15. Naturally, I'll expect free rent subsidies.

    16. I'll need Income tax credits so although I don't pay Mexican Taxes,
I'll receive money from the government.

    17. Please arrange it so that the Mexican Government pays $4,500 to help me buy
    a new car.

    18. Oh yes, I almost forgot, please enroll me free into the Mexican Social
Security program so that I'll get a monthly income in retirement.

I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all
his people who walk over to the U.S. from Mexico.

I am sure that President Calderon won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.

Thank you so much for your kind help. You're the man!!!

Living in Washington, we just get to see Californians moving into our state because they are tired of what has happened to CA. But someone help me here... is the city council so smart that they have figured out that enfocement of this law will drive more illegals from AZ to LA, and they want to stop that, or are they so dumb that they don't realize they will get sued as soon as an AZ company loses a contract because of this illegal law that infringes on interstate commerce?

  • DMo - 14 years ago

It's a good law, and should copied by all of the other States. If you are not here legally, you should be sent packing.

  • Sandra Swain - 14 years ago

The LA City Council should be fired. Arizona is following the law. Many people, from many countries, are here in the USA illegally. They have violated our laws. They have no respect for the process or our laws. The LA City Council is in favor of acting illegally, and has no respect for the law. Terrible. PLEASE SUPPORT ARIZONA. They have the courage to do the right thing. I hope more states get up the courage to do the right thing.

  • William S. - 14 years ago

With L.A. on the verge of bankruptcy, L.A. Unified School District and the verge of collapse, L.A. streets filled with potholes, the L.A. City Council wants to get involved in Arizona's business. Un-freaking-believable. Councilwoman Hahn said something on TV like, "we don't care about what the people want, it what we feel is right". That's how communism and a dictatorship work. We are a democracy built by the people for the people. I think the City Council needs to get their own house in order, before telling Arizona what to do. In 1994, the people of California overwhelmingly passed Prop 187. It was to stop those who came to our fair state under illegal means from stealing from legal immigrants and American citizens. The ACLU overturned the voice of the people. Look what has happened to Los Angeles since 1994. We have gone into the toilet. We had a chance to bring the state back again. Arizona sees what is happening and they do not want to be like California in 15 years. We set the precedent. Who can blame them. Would any state or city want to trade places financially with L.A. or California? I can't blame Arizona for what they are doing.

    POLL QUESTION

" ARE YOU IN FAVOR OF CRACKIN' THE WHIP, ON OWNERS OF BUSINESS'S THAT EMPLOY UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS?"

    1. YES

    2. NO

THERE'S A REAL POLL FOR YOU RACIST JERKS !

All you racists in CA need to get a clue and stop supporting the business men who hire these illegals instead of just being brain washed by talk shows with right wing corporate shill hacks !
    think idiots !
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well. JuddyBentley, this is from SB1070 -- the part that is not hyped by the Hispanics activists and new media.

    A. An employer shall not knowingly employ an unauthorized alien. If,
12 in the case when an employer uses a contract, subcontract or other
13 independent contractor agreement to obtain the labor of an alien in this
14 state, the employer knowingly contracts with an unauthorized alien or with a
15 person who employs or contracts with an unauthorized alien to perform the
16 labor, the employer violates this subsection.

For a second violation, as described in paragraph 3 of this
28 subsection, the court shall order the appropriate agencies to permanently
29 revoke all licenses that are held by the employer specific to the business
30 location where the unauthorized alien performed work. If the employer does
31 not hold a license specific to the business location where the unauthorized
32 alien performed work, but a license is necessary to operate the employer's
33 business in general, the court shall order the appropriate agencies to
34 permanently revoke all licenses that are held by the employer at the
35 employer's primary place of business.

Who looks foolish now? Read the bill. It is only 17 pages.

This poll sheds light on why Germans were so easily accepting of National Socialism's call to keep tabs on its version of undesirable people. It wast the proverbial "frog in the kettle." Why the uproar? - They're not coming after me! And while on the subject, if Arizonans want to stay in Arizona, I'm all for that. I think a border check at Yuma to check their credentials would be in order!

  • jack wilson - 14 years ago

I support Arizona, the rule of law, property rights and civil rights. American civil rights are violated when property rights and boundaries are not respected, when illegals consume taxpayer resources and vote illegally (remember, Democrat are officially against showing ID's in elections)

  • Mike - 14 years ago

LA city council is made up of fools who are pandering to the illegals. They need to be voted out...

  • R C in FL - 14 years ago

A tip of the hat to the folks in AZ. Don't boycott AZ, support it. They understand what it's like to live in a border state.

I've lived in CA for 60+ years and watched it go downhill. Signs in stores used to be in English, now they're in Spanish. We were taught in English and now our children have to wait for Spanish-speaking children to catch up.

I applaud what's happening in AZ and I hope they are successful in their efforts to take back their state.
Maybe then someone in politics will really listen and actually do what 'the legal citizens of America' want.
God love the USA and keep it legal. I live by the rules. What don't the politicians understand about the word illegal?

If you need to boycott something, boycott Ian Lee. Everything he writes shouts ignorance and racism.

  • vic - 14 years ago

LA's boycott is unconstitutional as well as stupid: http://www.frumforum.com/l-a-s-illegal-arizona-boycott

  • Steve - 14 years ago

I for one, fully support the Arizona law. L.A. can do as they please. However, I am participating in my own boycott. I will no longer attend sporting or cultural events in L.A., no more restaurants or movies. Purchases for my small business will be done online from Arizona companies. As soon as the temperature is below 85 degrees, I will spend a two week vacation with my family. You all can do as you please. I am a conservative American and hate to see this great country continue to be ruined.

  • Vic - 14 years ago

The IDIOT council members don't understand that they're talking about breaking legal contracts because of ideology rather than performance under the contract. And they've made that fact public. If they go through with this, they can expect to be sued by the Arizona businesses with whom they are breaking contracts. Who loses? The LA taxpayer...AGAIN.

  • Joey - 14 years ago

My family moved from LA a long time ago. So glad that we did. It seems that they just keep moving in the wrong direction. Illegals are currently getting more benefits that Americans. They are being given funding from tax money that the American people have worked hard for, yet the Illegals have made no such contribution. This money should be funding our schools, and being used to improve our country. Instead, our children are being neglected in school, their teachers are disappearing. Our communities are falling apart. These people who are supporting the Illegals need to realize some important facts about who they are supporting. These Illegals are NOT contributing to society, but only themselves. They do not pay taxes, yet expect financial relief from those of us who do. Businesses are hiring Illegals because they are cheap labor, and by paying them under the table the business does not have to pay the taxes to the city/State either, saving them thousands of dollars per year for EACH Illegal they employ. Americans are loosing their jobs to illegals, being forced into unemployment. They want to fix unemployment? Then they need to get rid of the Illegals! They want to increase tax revenue? Then get rid of the Illegals! This way the Americans can get back to work, once again contributing to society.

Here is another way of looking at it for you politicians out there. The Illegals are NOT paying taxes that pay your salaries! So by taking a stand, and taking action like Arizona has, you are not only improving the quality of life for your community, being part of the solution to fix unemployment, but you are also increasing your salary! Having more Tax paying citizens means you have more money to spend!

  • CL - 14 years ago

The poll omitted one important answer, "No because I support the Arizona law and because a boycott will be bad for the people of Los Angeles." That is my real answer.

  • Ashley Quintero - 14 years ago

We need to bycott LA. As the polls show LA's people stands with AZ. I am moving to AZ. I ll never support LA again.

  • Elein - 14 years ago

GREAT JOB ARIZONA. finally someone is doing something.

  • styrgwillidar - 14 years ago

Why didn't the poll include the choice:

Yes. And the city of LA should pass a law similar to Arizona's and sue the Federal government for failing to enforce the immigration laws at the federal level.

I bet that choice would have polled well above 50%

  • Shelly - 14 years ago

First off let me start by saying one thing about all these "TROLLS" posting crap about people that love to see our law's enforced. Race play's no part in anyone's feeling about our LAW's. Now, if you want to start changing law's lets start with Mexico. Did you not know it is illegal for a US citizen to work in Mexico with out a work permit. Did you also know that it is almost next to impossible for a U.S. Citizen to acquire a work permit in Mexico. So, given that FACT why don't all you bleeding heart S.O.B's go back to Mexico and change your law's first before you ask us to change ours. If you can't do that then shut up and get out. Arizona, in my humble opinion (IMHO) is dead on target and I will never buy crap from LA again. I hope you all burn in hell where you belong.

  • WM - 14 years ago

My only question is did the Los Angeles of Mexafornia City Council bother to check with its constituents before taking the vote, because data shows the council's action flies in the face of national sentiment on the anti-illegal immigration law. Who elected these jerks??

I voted no, that the city council should mind its own business. At the same time, I recognize that everybody has a right to free speech.

That said, I've decided to boycott any and all future Hollywood films, including Iron Man II, which I was sort of looking forward to seeing.

Will my boycott have any effect? No, probably not, but I'll feel better knowing that I no longer support an unAmerican anti-white hate-filled segment of the population.

I am an Australian living in that country. I spent almost seven years in Iraq and Afghanistan fighting the war on terror. Stop thinking about illegal immigrants only. The same porous routes could easily be used to insert terrorist units and weapons into the USA.

Civil liberties and freedom are essential and must be protected but NOT at the cost of compromising the security of your nation. Civil libeterians - if you want to disagree with me that's fine, but you have no credibility in this matter in my eyes until you have held your mates hand while they died in some middle east town no one knows the name of and you've spent an afternoon picking up pieces of children after some "freedom fighter" detonated a car bomb in a kindergarden playground.

Arizona is showing the internal fortitude to reduce risk. Stop folding to the demands of minority special interest groups and harden up princesses.

Well to see why they voted this way, one need only look at the ethnic make-up of LA and especially it's elected officials. Hispanics will always band together for their own..right or wrong, legally here or illegally.

Please do not act suprised when a group with a whole lot more solidarity amongst themselves wins out over the rest of us. That is why we're losing this war..they are as one against us.

Here is the Ca law which is pretty much the same as the AZ law. It unfortunately is not enforced or used, but has been on the books for years.
California Penal Code 834b: 834b. (a) Every law enforcement agency in California shall fully cooperate with the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service regarding any person who is arrested if he or she is suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws. (b) With respect to any such person who is arrested, and suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws, every law enforcement agency shall do the following: (1) Attempt to verify the legal status of such person as a citizen of the United States, an alien lawfully admitted as a permanent resident, an alien lawfully admitted for a temporary period of time or as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of immigration laws. The verification process may include, but shall not be limited to, questioning the person regarding his or her date and place of birth, and entry into the United States, and demanding documentation to indicate his or her legal status.

First off, mexico is not a race, it's a country. Illegal is illegal, if you have a problem with the law, get out of the country. The L.A. city council is OUT OF THEIR MINDS!!! The verbage of the bill cannot be any more clear, race cannot be a factor in determining LEGAL right to be in the great U.S. of A. The race card is illigitimate and worn out. Comparing AZ to nazi germany further emphasizes the need for L.A. voters to kick every single one of those remedial "leaders". I have yet another reason to be proud of living in the I.E.

My fiancee and I used to live in Lawndale, inside of LA. He was born and raised in Hawthorne, and we still have family who live there. I will not be spending ANY money towards LA, and if I do come down I will stay with relatives and bring food from my hometown to eat, the only thing you will get us for is gas, but I will make sure to fill up in Kern County before crossing into LA. I have seen first hand in Hawthorne what illegal immigration looks like, to the point I was terrified to leave the house sometimes. LACC, I am glad we moved away, and I hope you drown in debt and get booted out, from the issues I saw in LA while living there for 5 years, I think you have a lot more to worry about than trashing the state that provides so much to you, jobs included. I am not racist, I am half Mexican on my father's side LEGALLY, Irish on the other. People spewing crap about racism need to shut up, and please for the love of....pick up a book and learn to read before issuing judgment on something you haven't bothered to research. Our next vacation will be in Arizona instead of LA theme parks like we planned. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

You have two families: “Joe Legal” and “Jose Illegal”.
Both families have two parents, two children, and live in California .

Joe Legal works in construction, has a Social Security Number and makes
$25.00 per hour with taxes deducted.

Jose Illegal also works in construction, has NO Social Security Number, and
gets paid $15.00 cash “under the table”.

    Ready? Now pay attention…

    Joe Legal: $25.00 per hour x 40 hours = $1000.00 per week, or $52,000.00
per year. Now take 30% away for state and federal tax; Joe Legal now has
    $31,231.00.

    Jose Illegal: $15.00 per hour x 40 hours = $600.00 per week, or $31,200.0 0
per year. Jose Illegal pays no taxes. Jose Illegal now has
    $31,200.00.

Joe Legal pays medical and dental insurance with limited coverage for his
family at $600.00 per month, or $7,200.00 per year. Joe Legal now
    has $24,031.00.

Jose Illegal has full medical and dental coverage through the state and
local clinics at a cost of $0.00 per year. Jose Illegal still has
    $31,200.00.

Joe Legal makes too much money and is not eligible for food stamps or
welfare. Joe Legal pays $500.00 per month for food, or $6,000.00 per
year.. Joe Legal now has $18,031.00.

Jose Illegal has no documented income and is eligible for food stamps and
welfare. Jose Illegal still has $31,200.00.

Joe Legal pays rent of $1,200.00 per month, or $14,400.00 per year. Joe
    Legal now has $9,631 .00.

Jose Illegal receives a $500.00 per month federal rent subsidy. Jose
Illegal pays out that $500.00 per month, or $6,000.00 per year. Jose
    Illegal still has $ 31,200.00.

Joe Legal pays $200.00 per month, or $2,400.00 for insurance. Joe Legal now
    has $7,231.00.

Jose Illegal says, “We don’t need no stinkin’ insurance!” and still has
    $31,200.00.

Joe Legal has to make his $7,231.00 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline,
    etc.

Jose Illegal has to make his $31,200.00 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline,
and what he sends out of the country every month..

Joe Legal now works overtime on Saturdays or gets a part time job after
    work.

Jose Illegal has nights and weekends off to enjoy with his family.

Joe Legal’s and Jose Illegal’s children both attend the same school. Joe
Legal pays for his children’s lunches while Jose Illegal’s children get
a government sponsored lunch. Jose Illegal’s children have an after school
ESL program. Joe Legal’s children go home.

Joe Legal and Jose Illegal both enjoy the same police and fire services,
but Joe paid for them and Jose did not pay.

    Do you get it, now?

If you vote for or support any politician that supports illegal aliens…

You are part of the problem!

Viva Arizona!! If Los Angeles wants to boycott Arizona, then I say they should put their money where there mouth is and stop buying electricity and water from Arizona, and not just cherry pick the contracts that suit them. We have the stupidest politicians in the country. Boycotting AZ proves the level of their intelligence. It's scary to know these are the people running LA of all cities. Couldn't be bum #*!x Nebraska or North or South Dakota. I am always stunned by their stupidity and their audacity.
This is what I see happening here. Tony Villa LaRaza raigosa and his other anchor baby buddies don't care what happens to businesses in CA/LA. or American citizens. All he and his LaRaza buds care about is getting all his peeps embedded solidly in CA, gain, keep and control the people and political power, plunder and pillage as much as he (they) can as long as they can and they are set up mega well for life. Run it like the mafia, hire all your peeps, have them cover your ass and give them as much as you can until the well runs dry. Stretch it out as long as you can at any cost because you are empowering and helping your raza and making mama proud, feeling good and getting your own goodies. When the city is completely ruined, no matter because they're living large and well behind their gated homes in good weather and so are his peeps. LA/CA becomes more and more third world. The Rich and powerful, the poor and little to no middle class because you can't afford to live here if you aren't rich or want to live in a neighborhood where mostly English is spoken.

The goal is not just create white flight, but American flight-all races, all colors except their raza. Notice how many politicians including our president are always protecting, enabling, subsidizing the illegals siding with them and against citizens. They speak of them as if there is no difference between a legal immigrant or an illegal. If you don’t support illegal immigration, the race card gets thrown around until it is almost to the point of being laughable and not working any more. The more Spanish spoken, the more divisive it is, just the way they like it. Divide and conquer. Have immigration reform (amnesty) and now you have the illegals competing for even more American jobs because there are no barriers to them.

What we really need to do is put pressure on the businesses that hire them and demand they enforce stiff fines and penalties for hiring them. Our government at every level hardly even whispers this is the problem and the solution. They fight bills like E Verify or the Save Act. If illegals can't find work or get subsidies most won't stay. We have to demand no freebies and stop with the anchor babies. No bilingual education. It's very devisive.

The people of AZ have exercised their right to vote in a legitimate attempt to improve conditions in their state. The City Council of LA has made a mockery of democratic principles in a ridiculous and misguided attempt to punish them for it. As a citizen of LA, I resent the city council making decisions in my name without any of my input, and I am frankly embarassed by this boycott. Comparing intelligent American citizens to Nazis?? Are you people out of your minds? You are our leaders? You are making us look like idiots. I for one offer the citizens of AZ my deepest apologies, and I wish you the best in your efforts to solve the problems that illegals are creating in your state. I hope someday bankrupt, filthy LA can follow your lead. Let's show the Mayor and his Council the door in the next elections!

  • JL Fitzpatrick - 14 years ago

Given the unbelievable waste of time and effort the City of LA has taken to boycott a State whose sole purpose in enacting such disparate a law is simpy to protect its citizens, the citizens of this Country, when the current Socialist Federal Government will do nothing enforce its borders; We are effectively boycotting the City of LA. That is to say, since we do not live within the socialist corrupt borders of this City with its Mayor of no moral values, we will be completely boycotting all shopping and dining within the City limits, for the rest of our lives. This week we have already turned down an invitation to to Dinner and instead recommended a location outside of City Limits. When we pay far too much for our Services, including Health Insurance, while Illegal Immigrants get these services for free at our expense, it is utterly appalling that this Corrupt City would even waste its time to alienate the Citizens of this once great (but now hopelessly in debt) State and Country.

This is a comment from another poster, but it's so important, it bears quoting, over and over again. It may already be among the comments I haven't read here, but it bears repeating anyway. ~>

"Janice Hahn evoked Cesar Chavez's name in taking this stand against Arizona's SB 1070 - She tried to say that the City Council was being like him in boycotting Arizona. I am so embarrassed by these people who represent our City of Los Angeles. Their ignorance shines every time they open their mouths to make yet another statement about illegal immigrants.

FACT: Cesar Chavez was a 3rd generation American citizen, born in Yuma, Arizona. In his prime, Chavez fought constantly against illegal immigration. They took jobs away from legal California immigrant farm workers, and Chavez and the United Farm Workers Union he headed, routinely reported, to the INS, for deportation, suspected illegal immigrants.

Next time you evoke someone's name for your cause, Janice, maybe you should do a little research first. Cesar Chavez would support the Arizona law!

amount of Latinos, in order to grab to their diminishing positions of power and privilege, by a few, in their dying kicks, that unfortunately is when they are at their most dangerous.

  • Alex Mendoza - 14 years ago

Regardless of what you or I may think about the influx of undocumented workers, their cost or benefits to our economy, the safety, moral and humane implications of their migration, the issue here is not one of immigration, legal or otherwise. The issue here, at least in my point of view, is one of civil rights, fairness and justice. I can't allow that a minority of radical extremists in one side of the argument, with their actions, jeopardize the rights of so many people, not to mention directly those of my daughters. I can't allow myself to stand quiet while their rights (never mind mine) are being eroded. I will never like for them to be exposed to the indignity, humiliation and shame to be stopped, questioned and even, "when practicable", detained, ANYWHERE in their own country, just because the color of their skin, their surname, the clothes they wear or if they happen to be heard speaking spanish, all now provoking factors that raise "reasonable suspicion" in the eyes of the regressive forces now in power on AZ. All this may no be so self-evident to the majority of the population of AZ, hence the Boycott, bringing the issue home to them, even if in the form of what may seem to you as a crazy overreaction.

Since I am not an AZ resident, unfortunately I can't vote out the racist in power in AZ, but... the AZ residents can!!! To motivate them, and all those sitting now in the fences thinking this is not their problem to solve, IS THE SOLE PURPOSE OF THE BOYCOTT, it is not a punishing tool, it is a motivating one. To change the mind of someone, that is psychologically deficient and incapable of empathy towards his/her fellow human being, is something that is beyond the reach of any boycott. All the politicians and people that promoted and supported the establishment of this law did it arrogantly regardless of the consequences or cost to the residents of AZ. So I do not expect to have any influence in their already deficient minds. So, I promise that as I promote vehemently this boycott, I will promote the lifting of it the precise second this travesty of a law is repealed.

And for all those that will be retorting me with the same old, trite, and un-based arguments, fed to them by the propaganda of the same people that created the mess we are in now (the money barons, the greedy job-exporting companies, and the corrupt politicians on both side of the aisle) that now want to find someone to blame in order to divert their blame, I suggest you read the following just published in one of the most respected conservative newspapers in the nation:

    Five myths about immigration

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/30/AR2010043001106.html

So now re the federal ineptitude with the problem: Undocumented migration is the potato in the longest game of hot potato ever, played by the last 6, Republican and Democrat, administrations. But that doesn't excuse for each state to make their own draconian policies.

Once you have read the article above suggested, so the arguments against undocumented workers can be put for a while aside, please answer me: If SB1070 is just about "illegal" immigration, why in less of a month a law is passed and signed to ban ethnic studies, a ban to teach English classes is placed against "accented" teachers, and previous to all of them a law allowing anyone to carry concealed weapons with no permit necessary is enacted? Why for now proof of citizenship, beyond that required already at the moment of you registering to vote, is required before entering the polls?

Again, trying to get a defective mind, spoon fed on hate propaganda, to see clearly through it, so the truth is evident to them, well, that is asking "peras al olmo" (pears from a oak) but there most be some (I actually believe there is a large amount of) decent, but misinformed people, that will little by little peel the onion to see what there is truly behind all these, futile, efforts: To de-franchise the largest

What does Mexico do when you're illegally in their country?

What happened to those three kids that "accidentally" hiked into Iran (?) the other day and were there illegally?

We're the only country that is ass backwards in this. It's the government's job to protect it's citizens and that is not being done with open borders...

  • KyRoLi - 14 years ago

In Return, I hope Arizona provides a list of all of the cities that are boycotting them and return the favor. When you play with fire you will one day get burned. Do we really have an excess of business at the moment???

Read the law! We should be doing the same thing. For a city that has about 13.5% unemployeement you would think the city council would want to do what is in the best interest of it's citizens that are looking for work don't you?

A N D... where do you think the money goes when it is earned by "ILLEGAL" Immigrants. Back to their country. IT DOES NOT GET SPENT HERE TO HELP OUR ECONOMY...

Think people.... Think! Just do it LEGALLY. Immigrate LEGALLY! There is a process...

  • Cathy Peason - 14 years ago

This ILLEGAL alien problem was present in our country once before and was solved in 1954 by Dwight Eisenhower. Bing or google "Operation Wetback" and read all about it.

  • RN in Cali - 14 years ago

I am so sick of city government ignoring the will of the law abiding, legal, tax paying citizens. I've had it. Most of us have focused on raising our kids and having to work extra to put them in private schools because the public schools are completely full of illegals, paying taxes, taking care of our homes (that are losing value in part due to the crime and cost of the illegals) and trying to enjoy what is left of our loves when all of those responsibilities are met.

In a way we trusted them to just do their job and look out for the interests of those paying the bills and not creating conflict. But, sadly those days are over. We have to get involved and let these people know we will find representation somewhere. They can not continue to act as though they only represent a small minority. Especially when it is not the most productive minority.

These are the same idiots who set gas rates, negotiate with unions to fatten their pockets with our money and run a city to the verge of bankruptcy. These morons don't see that they are also hurting the city of Los Angeles. The same idiots that support people from another country to march on our streets with their flags of their native country demanding, no forcing their wills over the laws of our land.

Why does any sensible person want to live in a city where the mayor and the entire city council are all stupid? Move to Orange or San Diego County for your sake.

  • Julio - 14 years ago

My father and mother came to the US from Guatemala legally in the 70's. They worked very hard to bring their siblings over legally as well. Illegal immigration is an insult to those immigrants who were patient and followed the rules. My parents have always been very against illegal immigration as am I because it is well ILLEGAL! Illegal immigrants have created horrible stereotypes for honest LEGAL immigrants.

what i hate about this city council is that they insist that Arizona is doing this because of racism. They believe Arizona wants to deport every Mexican. It's not about racism it's about people being leaches of their States resources. If your illegal you don't pay taxes, your probably very poor and won't contribute much. What you will do is use our schools, demand to be taught in Spanish, use our medical system, take jobs from Americans in a horrible economic climate.

I personally don't blame Mexicans for coming here illegally. I would too if I live id that stink hole known as Mexico. I blame our decrepit government for never doing anything about it.

And another thing, from my experience Latinos are the most racist people I've known. White people are to afraid to say anything about any race, but all the Latinos I know freely use the "N" word but in Spanish. They have derogatory words for all races and they use them all the time. When I started college I was rejected from a Mecha group because I wasn't Mexican even thought I was Hispanic. Mexicans think they are superior to all other Latinos, it's hilarious. The whole "La Raza" movement is not a Latino movement it's a Mexican movement.

at this point I'm just ranting. I can go on and on if I wanted but I've digressed from my original point. More power to Arizona, I hope Los Angeles goes bankrupt.

We need to build a bigger Wall, which will put many unemployed people back to work and after the wall is built we need to send the illegals back across the border where they belong unless they have the proper documentattion to work here temporarly.

I can't understand what part of ILLEGAL some people don't understand. I am a Mexican born person who came to this country a long time ago and did so LEGALLY. I am proud to be AMERICAN and so should everyone who calls America their home. This is not a racist issue like so many believe. This is not a race issue, a color issue, or a wealth issue. It is NOT anti-immigrant, it is anti-ILLEGAL. In order to have a functioning and orderly society, laws are necessary. People can't be allowed to do whatever they want and have everyone thing it's ok. If you're going to say it's fine to be illegal, then it should also be ok to drive drunk, to commit assaults, etc. etc. It is not! Mexico wouldn't let you overrun THEIR country and allow you to do as you please....why would we? I plan to support Arizona all the way!

  • Dennis - 14 years ago

This is another example of people in power expressing there personal views that do not reflect the views of there constituants. If any one is Nazi like, it would be The Los Angeles City Council and the Mayor. This display of stupity just proves that we have people that have no business being in office. The kind of money that is being squandered anually should be an impeachable offense. This city and state should be trying to improve our self image, instead we are allowing a couple of fools to speak for the masses. HOW SAD IS THIS! Has any one ever consider the consequences this boycott could have in LA ? People should be outraged at the fact that we are being compared to nazi behavior, for wanting to protect our borders and our American citizens. When Arizona's law works, maybe we could actually give back some of the jobs "NO" Americans want to do, like plumbers, drywallers, carpet installers ,eletricians, painters, mechainics, truck drivers, etc. Maybe If Arizona's law works we can have people apply for legal immigration, Maybe we might not have people left in the the desert because they couldn't keep up. May be Mexico could treate its population half as well as they are treated here and they might want to work in there own country and be proud. This law is already in place we have only to enforce it. I can only hope that California would come to it's senses and enact the same restictions
Watching this disgusting display by "Janice Hahn" trying to make a name for herself for the november election should be the biggest mistake of her career. The rest of her cronies should be replaced by respectable people who care about the citizens of LA

I'm just glad that all of LA's problems are solved, and now the city council can move onto weightier matters like what is happening in other states and countries. This reminds me of back in 2003 when they passed a resolution condemning George Bush and the Iraq invasion. Obviously then, the budget was taken care of, the potholes were all fixed, and they had the time to deal with foreign policy.

LA, you are so lucky to have this multi-tasking council that gets so much done! Don't let them get away! They are quite the catch!

Is saw your liberal esteemed elected city official on fox news today and his argument to not only the boycott o of Arizona but the equating it to Nazi Gemany. Quite the gem you have representing your to the world. This is without a doubt the most abusive and divisive form of legislation I've ever heard of. I mean, isn't LA on the brink of bankruptcy, and this is the way you are choosing to spend your time - pandering? Or is it polarizing?

I think you might be better served coming up with a better solution rather than just casting stones. As most people opposed to our law (of which 60% of the country agrees with) - lets criticize instead of offer solutions. Apparently you haven't read Arizona Bill 1070 - which reads essentially the same as the federal law - only not as strict. (federally it's a felony to be in the country illegally)

So, you boycott Arizona - I'm changing my vacation plans and visiting San Diego. I realize it's only the 3K I would have spent there, but let's start adding that up.

Are you under the impression L.A is any kind of a model city for anyone? Outside of the police chases - what is your notoriety?

I've lived in the city of Los Angeles for seven years now (was born/raised in LA county). But I have always been painfully and angrily aware of the illegal immigrant problem; just waiting, waiting, ... patiently waiting for officials to do something about it. The problem is SO HUGE and in everyone's face, how could it possibly NOT be dealt with, RIGHT?? So, where is the disconnect? What are council members NOT getting that everyone else in this city is so painfully aware of every single day?

And I have always done the bulk of my personal spending outside of Los Angeles, because prices/taxes are just too damned high, no doubt due to all the illegals this city supports. I will continue to live here, continue to wait, hope, pray, chant, blog, and vote for change to occur in the form of illegals being pressured to leave and return to their own country (that SHOULD be footing the bill for them instead of US).

And I will continue to make my purchases, especially major ones, beyond the boundaries of Los Angeles (and L.A. county) because frankly, it does not serve me nor my interests, and does not deserve my support.

The verification process may include, but shall not be limited to, questioning the person regarding his or her date and
place of birth, and entry into the United States, and demanding documentation to indicate his or her legal status.

Why is the LA City council even butting into AZ affairs? When it came to the DWP rate hike, they scratched their heads and said "we were duped". They didn't understand the difference of a 90 day increase and a permanent increase! Duh. How can we expect them to understand AZ law. If the City council thinks that AZ is acting anything close to Nazi Germany, then we truly are in trouble. LA City council is trying to close 439 medical marijuana shops around the city. Great, 439 store fronts now vacant, at least 2 employees per shop = 878 unemployed, tax's LA's not getting. At least AZ is thinking of a way to stop their budget losses.

Janice Hahn evoked Cesar Chavez's name in taking this stand against Arizona's SB 1070 - She tried to say that the City Council was being like him in boycotting Arizona.
