Nobody is splitting their votes, nobody is voting Kalamazoo just to spite GR. We vote Kalamazoo because it really is Beer city USA. It's a culture thing you just wouldn't understand unless your a craft/homebrewer. Just try to buy homebrew supplies in GR. Ever notice that their best supply store has half the selection at twice the price of Bells? Yes there are more breweries in GR, but in Kalamazoo we enjoy quality and culture over quantity.

  • Matt - 11 years ago

K-zoo and AA both have great breweries, and deserve recognition...however, neither produces the quality (and variety) of products that Founders, Vivant and GRBC do for GR. Also, neither has HopCat. Grand Rapids all the way!

  • Matt - 11 years ago

    C'mon RVA! Richmond, Richmond, Richmond!!!!

  • Susie - 11 years ago

    Go Kzoo!!!!

    Grand Rapids Hands Down!!!!

  • Lewis Colon - 11 years ago

I voted GR last year and -almost- voted for it again.
But my home area (A.A./Ypsi) is now listed so I have to give props to Arbor/Corner, Jolly Pumpkin, Grizzly Peak, Wolverine, O.G.,Blue Tractor and all the great beer bars/beer restaurants like Ashley's, Wurst, Red Rock and the like. Add in The Beer Depot, Adventures in Homebrewing as well.
And lastly, the Michigan Brewers Guild Summer beer fest.

Michigan IS a/The Great Beer State!

  • Butch Giusto - 11 years ago

Asheville, NC has an amazing number of breweries for a town/county its size. 10 commercial breweries for a population of 70,000 (170,000 in the county) plus two national breweries settling in (New Belgium, and Sierra Nevada). Not to mention the dozens of restaurants and bars that are brewing their own. I'm guessing it's the moonshiner history here in the mountains.

  • Katie - 11 years ago

Like others have said, Michigan really needs to put their vote into one location. Though Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor are growing in the beer industry, they still cannot compare to the 15 breweries in the Grand Rapids area in size, knowledge, or quality. Please, don't split our vote until there is a worthy challenger or we will have to forget Michigan completely for the title.

    Go Grand Rapids.

  • Ben C - 11 years ago

Aside from the numerous and unique options with more coming, being within a half hour drive of many more unique breweries and having possession of a very supportive home brewing culture, Grand Rapids has Brewery Vivant - the first LEED certified brewery in the nation! Environmental awareness that follows through to a healthy and friendly brewery environment. Furthermore, being near the freshwater lakes provides a great source of mineral rich water perfect for brewing. Either you gotta go Grand Rapids, or you just don't know what makes a good beer city!

  • Zach - 11 years ago

Come to Kalamazoo and drink real beer... or go to Grand Rapids and drink piss

  • Mike - 11 years ago

It is San Diego and has been for awhile. GR or Chicago or Asheville are great and all but they simply fail in comparison.

BeerCity USA poll highlights the spirit of support local, small town and big city Americans generate on behalf of their communities. BeerCity USA is not a measure of beer quality, number of breweries, volume of beer enjoyed nor any kind of “best-of-show” measurement.
This is Asheville all the way.

  • Matt Shearer - 11 years ago

Grand Rapids, hands down. While I think Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor are worthy entries, I fear that the votes going towards Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor that would've normally been for GR will rob Michigan as a whole of this claim.

  • Kerry - 11 years ago

Please, please, Michiganders and all those who know and love Michigan craft beer.... lets NOT SPLIT OUR VOTES. If we don't all vote for Grand Rapids, no one in Michigan will win. I love Bells. I love Jolly Pumpkin. I love ALL Michigan beer. But for sheer saturation of breweries, along with quality of said breweries (um hello Founders, New Holland, Vivant, Harmony, Odd Side, White Flame, Hideout, HopCat, etc etc etc etc) Grand Rapids is the clear winner and best way to represent Michigan. PLEASE, vote Grand Rapids. Please.

  • Paul Starr - 11 years ago

I voted for Grand Rapids for Beer City USA because the number of breweries (which is 15) and the high quality of beer that's brewed there. Compare Grand Rapids to Kzoo or Ann Arbor and Kzoo or Ann Arbor don't have nearly as many breweries and in my opinion aren't as worthy as Grand Rapids of Beer City USA. Keep in mind that I live in Lansing so I have no bias toward any of the cites and just going off the facts.

  • Lee - 11 years ago

    The Kzoo

  • Rob - 11 years ago

Kalamazoo's inclusion will seal GR's fate, I fear. All deserved props to KZoo, but agree with the first poster.

  • Brandy - 11 years ago

Kalamazoo hands down has the biggest beer culture and growing. Between Bell's brewery,OP, the other 3-4 opening in the next year and our AMAZING Kalamazoo Beer week activities - we FAR surpass any other Michigan city hands down. Sorry GR, I love ya but....you're no beer city ;)

  • Kelsey - 11 years ago

Grand Rapids going solo this year. Sorry Ashville
    Cheers!

  • Heather - 11 years ago

    Yeah G-Rap!

  • Big Willy - 11 years ago

    When I voted, I looked at 3 things -

Breweries per capita (not just number)

History of breweries / beer in the city, not just a new wave surge

The number of beers that warranted lofty reviews

The state of Michigan came out strong, the rest......

  • Ernesto - 11 years ago

I love K-zoo and I love Bells and I have a tremendous amount of respect for what they've done for craft beer in the world. But, seriously guys, all voting for K-zoo is gonna do is steal votes from GR and decrease the chance that GR will win it again. Winning this is a serious boon not only for Grand Rapids but for the Michigan craft beer scene and our state. Realistically, Grand Rapids has more breweries and a much more developed beer community. We host the winter MI Brewers Guild fest and next year the AHA conference (this is not coincidental). We have way more going on than K-zoo. With all due respect, be wise in your voting.

  • Ellie - 11 years ago

Grand Rapids!!! The Mitten Brewing Co is amazing in GR!

  • Carl - 11 years ago

I know some of you don't know but Kalamazoo is home to Bell's Brewery the largest craft brewery in Michigan and consistently one of the highest rated craft beers in the world. The Beer Exchange rated Michigan's Best Beer.Bar Arcadia Brewing company is also moving from battle creek to Kalamazoo, (they originally wanted to open here) and we have three open Brewpubs and 7 more breweries including Boatyard Brewing. We also are home to Imperial Beverage rated the best craft beer distributor in the nation. We also have the largest Beer Week in Michigan by participation.

Come to Kalamazoo you will learn how much we love our beer culture.

  • DJ - 11 years ago

    Best Beer City IS KALAMAZOO!

  • BrewPapaJ - 11 years ago

As a Bell's lover.........I still had to vote for ALL THE CHOICES in Grand Rapids.....

  • Drew - 11 years ago

For all the GR and K'mazoo folks... As far as the rest of us are concerned you are close enough to Detroit for America to know you're a shit town. I'd vote for anchorage before I'd vote for Detroit. Go Beer Go Jacksonville.

  • Mark - 11 years ago

I live in Chicago, and it is blowing up with new breweries/brew pubs. The beer culture here is really something to behold. However, I must stay true to where I grew up. Every time I visit Grand Rapids, I'm blown away by a new Founders or Vivant brew, and new breweries going in everywhere, and the new ones constantly improving their offerings.

Go Grand Rapids! Make it 2 years consecutive!

  • Ryan - 11 years ago

I'll vote Bells... wait, I mean Kalamazoo, when they fix the Oberon recipe.

  • Bob Boeberitz - 11 years ago

The first year we tied with Portland. the next two years we achieved sole status. So there is no doubt that Asheville is still it--Beer City USA!

  • Zach - 11 years ago

Kalamazoo has Bells, OP, and in the next year Arcadia is moving here and many others....

  • Amy - 11 years ago

  • Gwendolyn Spaulding - 11 years ago

    Grand Rapids!

  • amanda - 11 years ago

    asheville! duh.

  • Will - 11 years ago

Home to the some of the best brews, one of the top beer bars in the world, and more watering holes than you can shake a stick at in one downtown block.
Here's to GR claiming the title for 2013.

  • Drew - 11 years ago

Out of the southeast a new brewing giant is emerging. Jacksonville now has 7 local brewers with more looming and has built itself from virtually nothing in 3 years. Excellent beers from intuition, bold city, engine 15, green room, rag time, river city and Aardwolf. Folks who visit routinely love our beers and find them of high quality. While we aren't the biggest we are the best and it's time the 904 get recognized. Vote for Jacksonville!

  • Abby - 11 years ago

    A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, Iiiiiiii've got a brewery in Kalamazoooooo!

  • DH - 11 years ago

    Grand Rapids, MI. Hands down.

  • Jeff - 11 years ago

    KALAMAZOO Rocks. No competition.

  • Andrew - 11 years ago

Let's go, Grand Rapids. Probably the only mid-sized city in the world where the number of breweries and the number of churches are roughly equivalent.

Founders, Brewery Vivant, Hopcat, Hideout, Schmohz, Harmony, Grand Rapids Brewing Co., The Mitten Brewing Co., with New Holland, Perrin, White Flame, and Michigan Beer Cellar all within half an hour's drive. Need we say more?

  • Jason - 11 years ago

    Grand Rapids baby!

GRAND RAPIDS!!! I know Bells is in K-zoo and AA is a nice college town but when it comes down to it, GR is THE Beer City in THE Beer State. A Vote for Grand Rapids is the Vote for Michigan.

  • Scott - 11 years ago

Lets keep Grand Rapids as beer city USA!!! :)

    Jacksonville!~

  • Marc Drinksalot - 11 years ago

Jacksonville has the best breweries in Florida, and I include Cigar City Brewing in that statement. I would pit Intuition Ale Works and Pinglehead against CCB any day.

  • Greg - 11 years ago

Kalamazoo! Obviously. Can't wait for Bell's to start distributing to New York.

  • Sarah - 11 years ago

    Kalalalalalamazoooooo

  • Chris - 11 years ago

Go Blue? Typical..lol. GR!!!! All of the above!! Harmony/The HIDEOUT/THE MITTEN/PERRIN! COME ON G-RAP!

  • Ben D. - 11 years ago

Are you KIDDING ME? I'm a Grand Rapids beer writer, instructor, and a Craft Specialist at a Distributor.

Kalamazoo has THREE breweries (though soon to be four) and BELLS DOESN'T MAKE YOU BEER CITY.

Stop throwing Michigan votes away and SUPPORT GRAND RAPIDS!

A VOTE FOR KALAMAZOO IS A VOTE FOR ASHEVILLE.

Remember that we TIED last year? That means if we throw votes to Kalamazoo, we're going to LOSE AS A STATE.

WAKE UP and swallow your pride. This is about our STATE, not BELLS.

  • Bill Krupka - 11 years ago

I don't always drink craft beer, but when I do, I do in Kzoo!

  • Nicole Shastri - 11 years ago

    Love GR!

  • Lkeffectoffers - 11 years ago

Voted for Grand Rapids, but included in my vote is all of West Michigan. With 2 new breweries coming in Muskegon and the excitement of the GR favorites the West Coast of Michigan will Rock.

  • Roger - 11 years ago

Asheville!!! 13 breweries in one little county and 3 major craft companies pick our region for their East Coast homes: Oscar Blues (Brevard NC), New Belgium and Sierra Nevada 2014.

  • Mark - 11 years ago

I live in GR but gave the vote to Ann Arbor this time around, they have no shortage of quality breweries in all areas or the city. Go Blue!

  • Brenda - 11 years ago

Grand Rapids!!! Quality craft beer in a big city with small town charm. Go GRap!!!

  • Noah Metcalf - 11 years ago

It is stupid to have both Kalamazoo and grand rapids on the list. They are like 30 minutes away from eachother and in 50 years will both be a part of the same giant sprawling mass of suburbs. That said, grand rapids gets the vote. Founders> bells and there are more other small brewries of note and beer based cultural events around gr

  • Charles R. Hockey - 11 years ago

Lol @ Kalamazoo. Stop poaching votes from GR and hop on board. Bell's can't carry all of your weight for you.

  • Diane - 11 years ago

Go Grand Rapids! Let's win it this year!

  • kzeeuw - 11 years ago

    GR

  • Farrell - 11 years ago

Um, Joshua, obviously you have never been to Kalamazoo? You have never heard of Bells? Are you living under a rock? Yes, we have PLENTY of breweries here. Our downtown alone is bursting with them, and more keeping coming on! Why not visit here and learn more?

  • Matt - 11 years ago

Grand Rapids makes some killer beer! Wait... Michigan makes some awesome beers! go Michigan!

  • Andrew - 11 years ago

Everyone let's be real...Asheville will win this again, we live and breath beer here. Around here there isnt a single gas station, restaurant, grocery store or home without 1 bottle of a local tasty wnc beer. Everyone else is just playing the game that we have already won! Asheville NC son where the only thing better than our beer is more of our beer.

  • sirnix-a-lot - 11 years ago

GR all the way. must say I'm pretty proud of the state of MI as a whole. Can't beat it. Founders, Vivant, Shorts, Bells and on and on and on.

  • Ed - 11 years ago

    Grand Rapids IS BEER CITY!!!!!!

  • Jon Jefferson - 11 years ago

I got a beer in Kalamazoo. Sing it with me, you know the words.

  • erin lindsay - 11 years ago

    Go GRap!

  • Joshua - 11 years ago

I don't understand how Kalamazoo is on this list. Do they actually even have any breweries in the city limits? Just because you serve beer, it doesn't make you a beer city.

  • Catherine Barnes - 11 years ago

YES, there really is a KALAMAZOO!!!!!
