Take me drunk I'm home... in GR!

  • Matt - 12 years ago

    @Beer Connoisseur

There are GR breweries that are not technically within city limits. Don't try to throw out Bell's on a technicality.

  • Anne Armstrong - 12 years ago

    GO GRAND RAPIDS!!!!!

  • Char - 12 years ago

I'm almost afraid to move from GR and all of its tasty breweries! I love having Harmony just up the street, a handful of breweries downtown to choose from!

  • Adam Smith - 12 years ago

Is there any real reason for Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids to be bickering back and fourth?
Both cities have great beer programs they should all be proud of.

Lets just let the numbers speak for themselves.

  • Etna - 12 years ago

Grand Rapids for sure. After living in Cali for 5 years, I was worried about leaving all the delicious breweries behind when I had to move back to Michigan... Michigan breweries ROCK though!

  • Beer Connoisseur - 12 years ago

Yup...10 min away not in Kalamazoo!!! Maybe they should've changed there name to Comstock Brewery BTW that's when bells went downhill in my opinion... Oberon is crap now...so inconsistent sometimes cloudy sometimes clear... Soulsun was good tho!!!

Kalamazoo. Free College, Great Beers, Good People.

I will be raising my glass to Kzoo tonight at Bell's! Hope to see many of my Kzoo crew there! I am a Chicago native, born and raised, and I LOOOVE living in Kalamazoo. I am SO PROUD of this city. I have been to Grand Rapids and yes, there are fabulous breweries there too, and I have enjoyed most of them, as well as Dark Horse in Marshall, Paw Paw Brewing and so many more. I wish there was a Beer State, USA vote because hands-down Michigan has it on LOCK. But I live and breathe Kalamazoo so tonight I will be raising my pint at Bell's for Kalamazoo and may the best Beer City win!

  • myc o phile - 12 years ago

Grand Rapids all day! Beer Capital of the Beer State!

  • Brett - 12 years ago

Bells makes great beer, but Larry Bell has not been a friend to the craft beer industry in Michigan as of late. He has been vocally against legislation that would help the craft beer industry in MI thrive, most notably changes that would allow small breweries to self-distribute up to a certain amount. I can't imagine there is another owner of a brewery in MI that is in the Michigan Brewers Guild and is opposed to these adjustments to craft beer regulation in the state. http://www.grbj.com/articles/76269-regulations-come-to-a-head-for-small-craft-brewers. It is amazing that the Michigan brewing culture has gotten to where it is with some of the prohibition-era laws that remain on the books.

  • Ashlee - 12 years ago

Kalamazoo is making a name for itself

  • Loc - 12 years ago

Absolutely loved Bells and Arcadia, but Founders KBS and Doom won me over. Perrin's Kona Brown is also great. With all the great up and comming breweries plus established ones, not to mention the homebrew culture, GR is definitely beer city!

  • JB - 12 years ago

@Beer Connoisseur - Bell's was originally known as "Kalamazoo Brewing Co." and was indeed brewed in Kalamazoo. As they expanded, they set up their facility in Comstock...approx. 10 minutes from their original location, which is where the Eccentric Cafe and General Store are located.

  • Kristin - 12 years ago

    Go Kalamazoo

  • Laura - 12 years ago

    Grand Rapids for the win!!

  • Hoody - 12 years ago

Hey Bells lover....Bells is moving a bar to GR...http://www.mlive.com/business/west-michigan/index.ssf/2013/04/bells_brewery_opening_bar_in_g.html ...so....GR all the way!!! Not to mention all these people saying Bells Kzoo blah blah...look at a bottle most of the beers are made in Comstock (Galesburg) not Kzoo!!!

  • Scott - 12 years ago

Best beers... No question (ok Portland, OR, you guys aren't too shabby)

  • myc o phile - 12 years ago

Grand Rapids all day! Beer Capital of the Beer State!

  • Alec - 12 years ago

Any beer you can get in Grand Rapids, you can get in Kalamazoo (to a certain extent) and vice versa. Pitting Bells beer against Founders beer is a hard thing to do as they are both fantastic. What sets the two cities apart, however, are the breweries themselves and that is where Grand Rapids falls short. Bells Eccentric Cafe and beer garden blows anything Grand Rapids has to offer out of the water. And with the addition of Arcadia Ale opening up shop in Kzoo, other cities can't compete.

This vote comes down to Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, with Kalamazoo coming out the winner, just barely.

  • G$ - 12 years ago

Go Asheville! Being beer city is NOT simply a measure of the quality brew made locally, but also being in a community where you are happy to imbibe that beer!

It's pretty tough for me to choose 1 beer city. I have a lot of favorite breweries and no 2 are from the same city. This isn't to say that many cities don't have multiple fantastic breweries, but to choose one for me is just too difficult. Anyways, in the end this poll is just for fun, so vote for your favorite (if you can decide) be proud of your cities breweries and let's all celebrate the ever increasing number of incredible U.S micro breweries this great country has to offer.

    Cheers!

Shout out to Margaret from L.A. I met at the bar at Bells after the Borgess Kazoo Marathon, hope you had a safe trip home, hope you enjoyed your Larry's Double IPA Trial while we talked! ;)

Grand Rapids is an AMAZING city for beer lovers. We have countless breweries pumping out new & delicious beers and serving them up in some pretty excellent settings. Even my mom, a woman who would only drink bud-light lime with GRENADINE added, has come to love all the delicious beers Grand Rapids is producing. This city will turn a sissy beer drinker into a beer connoisseur!!

Greatest city in the world!! We have some great beer companys

  • Mike Rangel - 12 years ago

Every city nominated should be proud to be on the list, it should just be called the "Coolest 20 towns in the USA", because where there are great craft breweries there are usually great restaurants, diversity, love of nature, cool people. My town, Asheville is like that, and so is San Diego and Bend and lots of other places on the list. So be proud, don't slam other cities, instead come visit us here in the mountains of NC, or visit Grand Rapids (I definitely plan to) and know that you are among friends wherever you go. Cheers

  • Jeff Ford - 12 years ago

I am fortunate enough to live between GR and KZoo. If you combine those two towns and even add in what we have in New Holland down the road in Holland I think our "region" is the unparalleled anywhere! It's good to be those of us that live here!

  • Buster Bronco - 12 years ago

Come to Kalamazoo, where everyone goes to college for free and there is no city income tax. #Beer4Kzoo

  • John - 12 years ago

Kzoo is Garbage, Just like the people that live there

  • G_Smith - 12 years ago

Why I won't vote for K'Zoo: I was once spending $100 at Bells for brewing ingredients and some cases of their beer. They refused to honor a coupon I had for a free vial of yeast I'd won as part of a homebrew contest THEY HAD SPONSORED. Larry himself told me he couldn't accept it because the cost would "come out of his pocket". That was 10 years ago- I haven't touched Bell's since. That kind of penny pinching let me know how much he cares about his customers and the homebrewers that helped him get his start.

Our state is shaped like a mitten to make it easy to pick up a frosty mug of your favorite beverage in any one of our three great beer cities: Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids or Ann Arbor.

  • Tony - 12 years ago

I've lived in two of these cities, but since Jacksonville's a dumpy little swamp town I voted for San Diego.

    GRAND RAPIDS MICHIGAN

  • Johnny wha wha Flava Flav be drankin and Stinkn'!! - 12 years ago

I'm from Kalamazoo, and the town is great, but ... no contest! GRAND RAPIDS is Beer City USA. I would love to see my hometown shoot up some more breweries, but really, it's just Bells. Big whoop! Bells is everyone in GR too and actually opening a restaurant in Grant Rapids airport. That Tells you something! Heck, even New Holland Brewing... from Holland MI, is coming to Grand Rapids. Eeerryyybody wants to be in GR. and the beers flat out ROCK. Even the surrounding areas of Grand Rapids have rocking breweries like Perrin, Rockford Brewing Company, and White Flame! There are a number of new breweries set to open this year, and it's no wonder some of the best beers in the world are from West Michigan. Founders is distributing around the worrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrld. -WOOT WOOT DOOTS!

Kalamazoo is the place for the most exciting beers available. Gonzo's Biggdogg Brewing, Boatyard, Arcadia, Bell's. We make the best from the rest. Killers brews bar none.

I know I shouldn't play the "future" game but Asheville is going to be the home to New Belgium and Sierra Nevada soon. Some who support Asheville might try to claim Oskar Blues but that major brewery was built in Brevard, NC located about 30 minutes SW of Asheville.

  • Tommy FitzGerald Group - 12 years ago

Love Kzoo, BUT ADORE MY GR BREWS! From the FOUNDERS all over to OUR MITTEN, our breweries do more for our city than just brew!! Love ALL Michigan, but we know that GR BREWS LOVE more!!

I've been drinking microbrews in Kazoo since early 90's. Never been disappointed! People from all around the country and Canada come to Bells now.
Cheers to ILYDIO, Brett, and all who have come and passed too soon! Enjoy life, enjoy real beer flavor, and never regret anything you did that made you smile (vote Kalamazoo).

  • Brian Hill - 12 years ago

I love all the brews from Kazoo! Love the current brews from Kalamazoo and looking forward to the additions of the great brews from Gonzo's BiggDogg Brewing, Boat Yard and Arcadia Brewing. Raise your glass to the great city of Kalamazoo!

  • Angela - 12 years ago

    Go GR!

  • Chelle - 12 years ago

DUH grammar much...write in not right in!

  • Billy-Bob Atlantis - 12 years ago

I hear ya, Andy! But, likewise, you would also really enjoy a tour of Asheville, where the 3rd largest enclave of artists and craftsmen in the USA (behind only Santa Fe and NYC!) help foster an appreciation for the finer things in life, including craft beers. There you can easily WALK to at least 10 microbreweries, or maybe take a nice ride on the Brews Cruise bus. I'll be there, in Beer City, USA, for the upcoming Beer Week. Actually, Asheville is more like a village than a city, but in terms of home brewers and a knowledge and appreciation of all things creatively brewed, on a per-capita basis, it shines (and goes down) like a deep, golden ale, and has certainly deserved the title of Beer City, USA!

  • Chelle - 12 years ago

lmao at some of these comments. GR has a lot but when one achieves the status as a brewery that Bell's has then I guess in my own opinion they have room to talk, not to mention Arcadia is being built in downtown Kzoo at the present moment. Sorry but you can slam Kalamazoo all you want, saying they are just fragmenting the vote but it was a right in and for that alone the city is getting enough votes and that is nothing to laugh at!! :) Proud of Kalamazoo and glad they are doing so well on this!

  • O - 12 years ago

Jacksonville, the Bold City, is coming on strong with Green Room, Intuition, Bold City Brewery, Engine 15, and others. Lots of good places for ale and the Salt Life.

  • sarah b - 12 years ago

  • Todd - 12 years ago

    KZOO!

  • Dot - 12 years ago

Kalamazoo has it going on too...the culture may be more "visible" in GR but our roots go deeper...thank you Bells, bravo, OP, and soon to come Gonzo's BiggDogg, Arcadia, boatyard, etc.

  • sethtb101 - 12 years ago

GR is not uptight. What a rediculous claim. Hopcat is the #1 brewpub in the country because of their wide array of brews offered from everywhere. Not to mentuon siciliano's offers beers from all over the world. We just love great beer.

  • Jack - 12 years ago

The beer love for Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids here is awesome. Both are great. Kind of spam... but I'm moving from Fargo, ND to Kalamazoo next week. Looking to make new friends, specifically the craft-beer-loving kind. Connect with me on twitter @jackbaartman. Cheers!

Grand Rapids, Michigan! The best little big city in America, and the best place for a good beer! :-)

  • Austin - 12 years ago

Hey G.R. folks - please keep on telling others how to vote, as if they aren't able to make their own decisions. And regarding this whole "splitting votes" thing, why do Kalamazoo folks have to vote for you? You've already had it, shouldn't that mean you should be voting for Kalamazoo if anything?

  • Gorb - 12 years ago

Fun fact: while Asheville, Kalamazoo, and Grand Rapids fans flame on, Bend and Denver are steadily collecting their due. Why were such huge powerhouse cities included this year?

  • Katharine - 12 years ago

    AVL all the way!

  • Julia - 12 years ago

Asheville should definitely win for beer city, if you've ever been here you know we have some of the best breweries in the nation...there is a reason everyone is moving there breweries to Asheville.

  • Hondo - 12 years ago

@Nick, don't be a dick. There is plenty of KZOO area brews sold in GR. Bell's, for one, is on tap almost everywhere I go.

  • Annette Cocke - 12 years ago

Asheville, NC is the only beer city!

  • hanson - 12 years ago

If you haven't tried perren brewery yet, do it. I put them second to Founders.

  • Ryan - 12 years ago

Dan, I don't think you can count a city that is an hours drive away a suburb…

  • Jordan - 12 years ago

I try local beers when ever I travel. Lots of good beers out there. I see a lot of comments about GR and it is a great place for beer, but Kalamazoo is a community for beer and should be beer city USA, hands down.
