Didn't Sterek win the 2014 Ultimate Slash Madness Tournament (with almost 1.5 million votes in Round 3 when they defeated Destiel ) ? Even in the easy 4 sided Final , they got nearly 200 000 votes.
Stydia (the so called "big" ship in Teen Wolf) is not even up to 100 000 votes.
Not much of a mystery why MTV catering to Stydia stans, is not reaping the same kinda ratings as during the Sterek era.

"No, it means that the overall quality of the show has gone way downhill. Let’s face it, the hay day of the pack is over– Allison and Isaac, huge fan favorites, are gone, as is Danny, who wasn’t in the pack but still. Plus, the interactions between pack members aren’t as fun anymore. They’re very often segregated into boys and girls (????) and they’re usually in the same groupings instead of all mixed up, showcasing the strong friendships.
Furthermore, the supernatural plot lines of s4, s5a, and s5b, while not INHERENTLY bad, were executed far worse than the supernatural plot lines of the first 48 episodes. A part of the problem is that the show takes itself too seriously now, so the episodes are less enjoyable to watch overall. They try too hard to be dark and epic and ignore characterization, humor, romance, and campiness, which are the STAPLES of teen wolf– the bread and butter. Also, I’ve found that the episodes are okay when you bunch them all together and marathon, but watching this show week by week is painful. It feels like nothing ever happens in the episodes. The whole season moves very, very slowly, and then the last few episodes jam packs everything in and usually their mythology isn’t very well thought out so the conclusion feels weak.
To top it all off, TW ruined its most popular friendship (and didn’t properly repair it) and they’re not doing a super great job with stydia, either, considering the fact that Stiles and Lydia LITERALLY DO NOT TALK TO EACH OTHER UNLESS ONE OF THEM IS KNOCKING ON DEATH’S DOOR.
Oh, AND, this show treats female characters terribly (hello, the majority of your audience is female? We want to see ourselves represented?) their cgi is laughable (which was okay at the beginning, but if you guys are going to pretend to be a serious show– which, first of all, don’t, cuz I like you the other way– then please don’t spend your whole cgi budget on making flames come out of Parrish), and they don’t bother with high school ANYTHING anymore, which was the best part of TW.
Granted, some of the ratings probably collapsed because people who shipped St/erek left the show, but the more casual viewers are probably leaving because of all of this."

on this fanlore wiki site . What was irritating was that they just used how many fanfics were tagged in A03.
Stydia has far more videos than they do on YouTube, which I think is an important metric as well. There are 75,000 videos with the words “Stiles” and “Lydia” in them, and 39,500 videos with the words “Stiles” and “De/rek” in them (obviously I used his real name, I just don’t want the Ste/rekers to come after me for this post). And that’s being generous: if you look at the most recent videos with the words “stiles” and “de/rek” in them, many of them have nothing to do with Ste/rek, while most videos with “Stiles” and “Lydia” in them are Stydia (I would know, because this is how I find Stydia videos).
In the past week there were 24 Stydia (legitimate, over one minute) music videos (which is actually pretty slow for us, because most of us Teen Wolf editors are on a hiatus. There were literally hundreds of Stydia videos that came out after 5x16), and 4 Ster/ek videos.
There’s also the fact that the most popular music video of Stydia has approximately 680,000 views, while the most popular music video for Ster/ek has approximately 578,000. And then you’ve gotten consider the fact that while the Ster/ek video was made in September 2012, the Stydia video was made in July 2015. That means the Ster/ek video had three more years to get views than the Stydia one.
What it means is that the Ste/rek fans have to write lots of fanfic to fill the gaps left in canon, whereas Stydia fans celebrate canon because it supports their couple.
So I would argue that Stydia actually is the most popular pairing in the active fandom, while Ste/rek mostly represents people who stopped watching the show and base their ship off of their fantasy of what the show could have been (actually the majority of current Ste/rek fanfiction is AUs, with very few even attempting to connect their ship to canon anymore). All of which is fine, of course! Ship and let ship. But please don’t tell us that our ship and our fandom is inferior to yours, when we have Receipts to prove otherwise." Yes, talking about an episode doesn’t mean fans liked it. However, as far as 5x16 goes, there was a lot of positive fan reaction to that. The show got a lot of attention from media sources, and after that episode Stydia-related hashtags have been trending a lot. Plus, while the ratings don’t matter objectively, they did go up the week after that episode, which meant more people were tuning in live - because they saw people saying positive things about it and decided to watch it.
The other thing is for advertisers, what’s most important is how many people are watching something. Not how many people liked it. So if the episode is being discussed on Twitter by lots of people, it probably means they all watched it somehow, even if that means they streamed it. But for many of Teen Wolf’s advertisers, it doesn’t really matter if people are watching the commercials, because Teen Wolf is the king of product placement. What car company sponsors Teen Wolf? Toyota. How do we all know that? Because literally every character drives one.
So being the most social show for 5x16 was really good for Teen Wolf. It’s good for TV shows to be talked about, especially on a network like MTV that has mainly young fans and is really good at engaging with social media. "

So I decided to check it out, because I had a suspicion that this poll had a bunch of whiny anti-stydia people being sour grapes and literally pressing “no” over and over again, like it actually matters.

"If you noticed, I gave kudos to Ster/ek and St@lia for doing so well! I actually have a certain fondness for St@lia, and I respect the Ste/rek fandom. That was an anti-M@rrish post, because they are my biggest NOTP. It wasn’t about Stydia beating the other ships, it was about how poorly M@rrish was doing. And it was tagged correctly, like I have done in this post, so it wouldn’t show up in their tags.
It was a joke. Obviously, the polls don’t matter. I never cite polls as a reason for why a ship should happen. Obviously fanbase size/vocality does not have an influence, otherwise Ste/rek would have happened. But it didn’t. The reason those shippers left the fandom is because even before Derek left the show, they were flat-out told that their ship wouldn’t happen. For which I gave them sympathy at the time. But it’s been nearly two years since then. Don’t you think it’s time to get over it?
Oh, and I had to really dig to find that Hollywood life poll. That was from back in October, wasn’t it? It took me a second, because I found another one (from right after Jeff did all of his post-season interviews) where 67% said they wanted Stydia to get together. I forgot that both of them even happened, do you know why?
Because I don’t keep track of polls that happened months ago.

"No, it means that the overall quality of the show has gone way downhill. Let’s face it, the hay day of the pack is over– Allison and Isaac, huge fan favorites, are gone, as is Danny, who wasn’t in the pack but still. Plus, the interactions between pack members aren’t as fun anymore. They’re very often segregated into boys and girls (????) and they’re usually in the same groupings instead of all mixed up, showcasing the strong friendships.
Furthermore, the supernatural plot lines of s4, s5a, and s5b, while not INHERENTLY bad, were executed far worse than the supernatural plot lines of the first 48 episodes. A part of the problem is that the show takes itself too seriously now, so the episodes are less enjoyable to watch overall. They try too hard to be dark and epic and ignore characterization, humor, romance, and campiness, which are the STAPLES of teen wolf– the bread and butter. Also, I’ve found that the episodes are okay when you bunch them all together and marathon, but watching this show week by week is painful. It feels like nothing ever happens in the episodes. The whole season moves very, very slowly, and then the last few episodes jam packs everything in and usually their mythology isn’t very well thought out so the conclusion feels weak.
To top it all off, TW ruined its most popular friendship (and didn’t properly repair it) and they’re not doing a super great job with stydia, either, considering the fact that Stiles and Lydia LITERALLY DO NOT TALK TO EACH OTHER UNLESS ONE OF THEM IS KNOCKING ON DEATH’S DOOR.
Oh, AND, this show treats female characters terribly (hello, the majority of your audience is female? We want to see ourselves represented?) their cgi is laughable (which was okay at the beginning, but if you guys are going to pretend to be a serious show– which, first of all, don’t, cuz I like you the other way– then please don’t spend your whole cgi budget on making flames come out of Parrish), and they don’t bother with high school ANYTHING anymore, which was the best part of TW.
Granted, some of the ratings probably collapsed because people who shipped St/erek left the show, but the more casual viewers are probably leaving because of all of this."

on this fanlore wiki site . What was irritating was that they just used how many fanfics were tagged in A03.
Stydia has far more videos than they do on YouTube, which I think is an important metric as well. There are 75,000 videos with the words “Stiles” and “Lydia” in them, and 39,500 videos with the words “Stiles” and “De/rek” in them (obviously I used his real name, I just don’t want the Ste/rekers to come after me for this post). And that’s being generous: if you look at the most recent videos with the words “stiles” and “de/rek” in them, many of them have nothing to do with Ste/rek, while most videos with “Stiles” and “Lydia” in them are Stydia (I would know, because this is how I find Stydia videos).
In the past week there were 24 Stydia (legitimate, over one minute) music videos (which is actually pretty slow for us, because most of us Teen Wolf editors are on a hiatus. There were literally hundreds of Stydia videos that came out after 5x16), and 4 Ster/ek videos.
There’s also the fact that the most popular music video of Stydia has approximately 680,000 views, while the most popular music video for Ster/ek has approximately 578,000. And then you’ve gotten consider the fact that while the Ster/ek video was made in September 2012, the Stydia video was made in July 2015. That means the Ster/ek video had three more years to get views than the Stydia one.
What it means is that the Ste/rek fans have to write lots of fanfic to fill the gaps left in canon, whereas Stydia fans celebrate canon because it supports their couple.
So I would argue that Stydia actually is the most popular pairing in the active fandom, while Ste/rek mostly represents people who stopped watching the show and base their ship off of their fantasy of what the show could have been (actually the majority of current Ste/rek fanfiction is AUs, with very few even attempting to connect their ship to canon anymore). All of which is fine, of course! Ship and let ship. But please don’t tell us that our ship and our fandom is inferior to yours, when we have Receipts to prove otherwise." Yes, talking about an episode doesn’t mean fans liked it. However, as far as 5x16 goes, there was a lot of positive fan reaction to that. The show got a lot of attention from media sources, and after that episode Stydia-related hashtags have been trending a lot. Plus, while the ratings don’t matter objectively, they did go up the week after that episode, which meant more people were tuning in live - because they saw people saying positive things about it and decided to watch it.
The other thing is for advertisers, what’s most important is how many people are watching something. Not how many people liked it. So if the episode is being discussed on Twitter by lots of people, it probably means they all watched it somehow, even if that means they streamed it. But for many of Teen Wolf’s advertisers, it doesn’t really matter if people are watching the commercials, because Teen Wolf is the king of product placement. What car company sponsors Teen Wolf? Toyota. How do we all know that? Because literally every character drives one.
So being the most social show for 5x16 was really good for Teen Wolf. It’s good for TV shows to be talked about, especially on a network like MTV that has mainly young fans and is really good at engaging with social media. "

So I decided to check it out, because I had a suspicion that this poll had a bunch of whiny anti-stydia people being sour grapes and literally pressing “no” over and over again, like it actually matters.

"If you noticed, I gave kudos to Ster/ek and St@lia for doing so well! I actually have a certain fondness for St@lia, and I respect the Ste/rek fandom. That was an anti-M@rrish post, because they are my biggest NOTP. It wasn’t about Stydia beating the other ships, it was about how poorly M@rrish was doing. And it was tagged correctly, like I have done in this post, so it wouldn’t show up in their tags.
It was a joke. Obviously, the polls don’t matter. I never cite polls as a reason for why a ship should happen. Obviously fanbase size/vocality does not have an influence, otherwise Ste/rek would have happened. But it didn’t. The reason those shippers left the fandom is because even before Derek left the show, they were flat-out told that their ship wouldn’t happen. For which I gave them sympathy at the time. But it’s been nearly two years since then. Don’t you think it’s time to get over it?
Oh, and I had to really dig to find that Hollywood life poll. That was from back in October, wasn’t it? It took me a second, because I found another one (from right after Jeff did all of his post-season interviews) where 67% said they wanted Stydia to get together. I forgot that both of them even happened, do you know why?
Because I don’t keep track of polls that happened months ago.
And I definitely don’t keep track of polls that happened six months ago just because they feature a couple I don’t ship, so that I can vote “no” against them over and over again, and pull it out as a receipt for why that couple shouldn’t happen. Because that is just sad, my friend."
