Have to have a physical copy. Usually buy from Best Buy, Hot Topic, FYE, or whoever has the best price, but selection is shrinking. Don't care for buying online because the always arrive damaged but sometimes its the only way to get them. I hate these digital only albums. I have to download the album then burn onto disc and then when the computer crashes have to do it all over again. I don't have a problem with using Itunes itself but music is art and having something in hand with all the artwork and packaging designs is always better than some computer file which is easily deleted, corrupted or so on. A lot of time and effort goes into most albums and that should be appreciated by actually buying it and not just saving it on your hard drive. They should give the cd buyers all the bonus tracks not just those who download from Itunes.
Definitely been buying a lot of CD's at brick-and-mortar stores lately. I usually buy at least one or two albums online a month though (always physical copies, I'm not big on digital-only)

When the local music store does not carry the cd i use amazon. ready for the new Machine Head!!!!!!!
Homer - 15 years ago
I still buy CD's at the local store just because I like being able to rip them in any format/quality I want and be able to change it later down the line. I don't have that flexibility with download services.
Tim - 15 years ago
I worked at a record store for the better part of 15 years. Nothing beats the feeling of purchasing new music and ripping it out of it's package and taking that first listen in the car ride home!
Metallian - 15 years ago
Amazon.com is easiest, just buy $25 worth of stuff and have it shipped free.
Lynn - 15 years ago
There are no local music stores near me, unless you count Walmart or Kmart, which do not carry most of the music I listen to. I buy on amazon what I don't pre-order from the bands or labels. I like to have the physical cd, no mp3's for me.
Christiane - 15 years ago
I love to have the physical CD! I try to buy CDs of my favorite bands as much as I can I find them here where I live. If I can't find it in the local stores I wait (and pray) to buy when the band come here to my country in a tour
J.D. - 15 years ago
Record store first. If they don't have what I am looking for I will try Amazon or ITunes. I do preorder as well in regards to bands I already know I want their album. MACHINE HEAD!!!!
Diego - 15 years ago
I listen a stream first and if I like it I consider buying the CD or maybe iTunes...
I listen to an album and depending on if I like it enough, I'll either digitally buy it or [if I really love the whole album/band] I'll buy a physcial copy, preferrably deluxe edition! :)
Joshua - 15 years ago
Call me old fashioned but I like buying CD's. Unless it's just a couple of tracks on an album that I like then I buy off iTunes.
Kristy - 15 years ago
I like to support bands by buying the actual album. I like to have the CD and the inserts. Although, it is getting harder to find good record stores out there, it's a shame. MACHINE HEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So pumped for the new album!!
darren - 15 years ago
we dont have any decent retailers where i live. usualy take a trip down country or have a friend pick them up when they go.other than that buy online or at a concert.
Scott - 15 years ago
Amazon seems to always have what you need. Some band sites are better than others when it comes to ordering new stuff
Robert Gottlieb - 15 years ago
Years ago I would buy used CDs at a Used CD Store, never a retailer. Now I don't buy CDs, instead I head over to Amazon as they are higher bit rate than iTunes for a lower or same price. I still buy whole albums vice individual songs. There is probably a demographic that says the younger kids buy single songs for most part. Us old farts ( I'm 43) tend to buy whole albums.
Robert
Jay - 15 years ago
There's just something about buying a cd from the band at a live performance. And getting it signed.
Awww yeah.
Justine - 15 years ago
Mainly buy from our local larger music retailer. Definitely don't download as we still love opening up a CD (or record for that matter) and getting that whole experience. Everything gets imported onto the IPod but you can't beat opening up a gatefold and reading about the band and looking at some great photos of a tour.
Jan W. - 15 years ago
We've lost a lot by not having physical music (CD's, DVD's, albums). There's a lot you can learn about an artist from what they add to those tangible objects: shared pictures, notes, lyrics, etc. I like to reference them at different times, and I don't want to have to log in to a computer or turn on a iPod to do it: I want to grab that (CD/DVD/album) jacket off the shelf and check it out. I really don't want to ever lose that connection, so I hope CD/DVD's don't fade away - heck, I'll even take an album over nothing/cyberspace!
Justin - 15 years ago
I'll pre-order CDs for the bonuses from my favorite bands, but I try to buy local otherwise ... when the price difference isn't too drastic.
I'm a CD junkie (see my web link for my collection), and I'm big on preorder specials lately, either from bands or labels or other. For example, I have preordered the new Machine Head for that sweet Metal Hammer fanpack!
Amanda - 15 years ago
I'll usually download some songs from a band that I might potentially like.
If they're good, I'll go looking for the CD.
I don't know where to find some bands, like Symphony X for example, because I'm in Australia and for some reason JB don't stock any Symphony X CDs.
If I can't find the CD, or I'm too lazy to go looking for it, I'll buy what I want from iTunes.
That's what I'm doing with the next DT album because I want it as soon as I can get my hands on it..
And then I'll probably buy a copy of the CD at a later date.
Laura - 15 years ago
I usually either buy the mp3's of songs, or the physical CD's, as it is nice to look back on a good purchase. Online stores do tend to have the best prices, but I like to support bands in the best way i can
Dick - 15 years ago
I tend to buy from iTunes these days. I used to buy CDs like a madman before I had 4 kids, and I certainly prefer to have actual CD, but I can not afford that anymore. I also stream online, which is a great way to find new music.
Synna - 15 years ago
Listen on Pandora then buy some either from Amazon, CD Baby, Bandcamp or direct from the band's/label's website.
Hawkman - 15 years ago
I buy most of my music from my local FYE. Stuff that's harder to find I buy online.
Phillip - 15 years ago
from Amazon.com
Jeanne O. - 15 years ago
usually just go to local Best Buy or FYE, or order from Amazon.com. will sometimes pre-order if there are decent bonus items offered.
Daniel Jones - 15 years ago
I used to buy a lot of music from BMG Music club but they changed the way they do things ,so I no longer purchase from them. I usually pre-order from a bands website when theres something new coming out that i want.
Eduardo - 15 years ago
Online stores have the best prices. Simple.
Hector - 15 years ago
Can't wait for Dt's Album!!!
Joakim N - 15 years ago

Heavy Metal Hottie - 15 years ago
Machine Head's new one is going to be amazing! Can't fucking wait to hear it.. Would love to win all these albums. Have heard good things about Opeth's new one. Looking forward to seeing them on the next tour. Keep up the good work Road Runner!
I still like buying CDs in store if possible, but prices online are much better than prices here in Australia. I occasionally buy from iTunes and eMusic as well but prefer to have the physical product of a CD with printed artwork. They sound a lot better than mp3 files as well.
Constanza - 15 years ago
Although it's very difficult to buy CD's I like in my country, I just love going to some of the little alternative stores to get my music :) It has a special meaning to me, and also I can´t wait to have them with me.. so it's the fastest way to get them haha
I have no set way that I buy music.
I mostly buy off Amazon, however if I'm in a music shop and I see a CD I want I'll buy it from there.
In some cases where the CD is neither available on Amazon or in store I'll buy off iTunes.

Gregory Farmwald - 15 years ago
I would love to get some free music from Machine Head, Opeth and Dream Theater. I buy alot from Amazon they have alot of good prices on used cds. I usually make pre-orders from my favorite bands, but I also buy from local stores. Hmmmmm how do I give a good response to this poll? Cheers, Gregory
Jay - 15 years ago
I usually buy from local stores. I just love the atmosphere at a good music shop and usually there's at least 1 person aworking there who knows enough about music to get you inot listening into even more bands. Gotta love having options like that.
Matt D - 15 years ago
Record stores are the place. Buy mostly used and cand spend hours going through looking for music. Buy CD's, burn to my iTunes then store them away. Very rarely do I purchase any music online.
Alex - 15 years ago
Always the phisical CD, having the music only in your computer doesn't feel the same.
Alma - 15 years ago
There's nothing quite like holding a new CD, pouring over the insert, unsuccessfully attempting to mouth lyrics during the first play. What is sad is that supermarkets have killed the smaller independent music retailers. I don't want to buy my music in Asda, I want to be in a record store with posters everywhere and the entire back catalogue of an artist's work. I don't want an MP3 - you can't touch it. It somehow seems less 'real'. Long live the physical music disc!

Used to buy a ton of discs from Sam Goody!
I'm a 44. I still buy the cd's at local record stores or order the cd's on the internet (example on epes.fi or cdon.com) here in Finland. I also loan some new cd's at local librarys. When i buy the new cd's i usually load it on my computer on mp3 format - after that i can listen my music everywhere i want. On my home stereos, my computer or even my mp3 players.

Chris - 15 years ago
I try to always buy at my local store. They have the best selection in town, and are some great people. The owners here really help promote the local music scene and I don't mind paying a dollar or two more, to help out a local business that is great for the community. Plus they have a lot of great used CDs, posters, etc. I also of course use online retailers (Amazon, mostly) to buy harder to find stuff. I always buy a cd, poster or something from a band when I see them live as well. This was a great poll and a great contest. Good luck to everyone.
Ashley - 15 years ago
I buy cd's usually at Best Buy or another local store but I have, at times, bought cd's from a show, if it's a new band I haven't heard before.
Hammond Chamberlain - 15 years ago

Eric Clasen - 15 years ago
For new stuff from my favorite bands I will usually attempt to buy the disk at a local store, for other/sampler type stuff I will usually go mp3 at this point. DT and Opeth in the same month is pretty cool! Thanks for asking, Roadrunner!
Brian Kessler - 15 years ago
I buy from local stores as much as I can (Vintage Vinyl in NJ is one of my favorites). Everytime I visit a new city, I look up what the best record shop is. It's so sad that they really are dying out.
If I can't get to a store...it usually Amazon, Relapse Webstore, CMDistro, or Omega Order.
Rapez - 15 years ago
I prefer cd's to mp3 and I like Roadrunner cd's because they are always well presented in some interesting editions like digipack with unreleased materials.
IanH - 15 years ago
I try and buy from as many sources as possible. Definitely more than three lol!
I usually buy on shops. But sometimes internet is your friend.
Chris Phelps - 15 years ago
I buy strictly from the record store because I like to look at other albums tthey have done and I like to have an unbiased choice.
cesar woore - 15 years ago
i use to buy tons of cds back in the late 80s and to the late 90s until i got an ipd in 2001. now i buy all my music through itunes and amazon. its alot better than carring around cds. now all my music is in one portable devise. also soon car manufactours will be phasing out the cd player only to have an mp3 outlet.
I prefer to buy music in a local record store, because some times have discounts or promotions jajaja, but any way I don't have credit card to buy online.
Greeeeeeeetings and Cheeeeeers! \m/

I like to have CD's to take with me and play in the car. I buy from Amazon a lot, but from the stores at Christmas and birthdays as my kids like to have some CD's as well.
jim - 15 years ago
I usually buy my c.ds from the local rcored shop, considering most of my c.ds are older metal, I also like to get a c.d at a show if I am seeing a smaller band at a club or smaller venue, itunes is good but you cant beat a good c.d
Mike - 15 years ago
There's just still something special to me about having an actual physical album.
Nikki - 15 years ago
The Inter Web is definitely a great way to expose yourself to new music, but if you really like what a band is doing, support your local record store (and the band) by going out & buying the album! Plus its Great to have that hard copy for when your hard drive crashes!!
Thea Emilie - 15 years ago
I always buy cds of the bands I love, like or think I might like. I collect cds and often buy at least one every time I see a cd for sale, no matter if it's online, band website, at a show, in record stores or gas stations.
Mostly I buy them at 'Platekompaniet' in Norway, and a online store called cdon.com
Buying a full album is always better than picking and choosing.
I have found that shopping from Amazon is cheaper than the local retailers such as HMV.
I also look carefully for albums that have been re-called as well as bootlegs.
(Which is something you cannot find on iTunes)
Skynyrd Rocks Dude !!!
I find it odd not that many people stream music

I always buy a cd, poster or something from a band when I see them live as well. This was a great poll and a great contest. Good luck to everyone.
I buy cd's usually at Best Buy or another local store but I have, at times, bought cd's from a show, if it's a new band I haven't heard before.
I still like to have something I can hold in my hands.
For new stuff from my favorite bands I will usually attempt to buy the disk at a local store, for other/sampler type stuff I will usually go mp3 at this point. DT and Opeth in the same month is pretty cool! Thanks for asking, Roadrunner!
I prefer cd's to mp3 and I like Roadrunner cd's because they are always well presented in some interesting editions like digipack with unreleased materials.
I try and buy from as many sources as possible. Definitely more than three lol!
like the Cds and the covers of the albums read all over and enjoy
buying online doesn't support your local economy, which we seriously need these days.. keep it local.. keep it metal \m/ \m/
Amazon and iTunes, what more do you need....
Heavy Metal!
It's a pretty even mix of Amazon/online and a store, usually try to go to an independent record store if at all possible.
I usually buy on shops. But sometimes internet is your friend.
I buy strictly from the record store because I like to look at other albums tthey have done and I like to have an unbiased choice.
i use to buy tons of cds back in the late 80s and to the late 90s until i got an ipd in 2001. now i buy all my music through itunes and amazon. its alot better than carring around cds. now all my music is in one portable devise. also soon car manufactours will be phasing out the cd player only to have an mp3 outlet.
Got in waves for now. Waiting for machine head.
I usually buy albums from bands on tour, that allows them to keep touring and releasing new albums.
Well, there's only one proper way to do it, go to a show, watch the band, and buy their CD, the good old fashioned way beats iTunes anyday. ;)
I usually buy CD's from my local music store.. But there's also times when I pre-order online, when it's something I just must have!
Most of my music isn't popular enough to get in my local record store....
I get most of them from Amazon, but I also like to order directly from the bands.
I'm waiting for heritage !!!!!
I usually buy in my local store, specially collectors editions.
I usually buy CDs at a store like Best Buy or online on Amazon.com. In the past year, I have added MP3 albums through EMusic and ITunes.
I usually buy cd's in Galeria do Rock in Sao Paulo, but this difficult, because the CDs are too expensive =/
I usually buy my c.ds from the local rcored shop, considering most of my c.ds are older metal, I also like to get a c.d at a show if I am seeing a smaller band at a club or smaller venue, itunes is good but you cant beat a good c.d
There's just still something special to me about having an actual physical album.
The Inter Web is definitely a great way to expose yourself to new music, but if you really like what a band is doing, support your local record store (and the band) by going out & buying the album! Plus its Great to have that hard copy for when your hard drive crashes!!
G*ddamn, I buy sooo much music.
And Machine Head is ordered!!! ;-)
Buying only on occasions of the album being promising. Then again all the albums we can win this way are on my buy-list!
Wherever is cheapest.
I always pre-order the new stuff so it's usually online at AMZN, label or band website first.
I always buy music from iTunes because it is really convenient and I don't have to leave the comfort of my home...
I buy in the store when I can find it...but that's rare! Have started doing more online buying. I want this prize pack! DT and Trivium...OH YEAH!!!
Buying a full album is always better than picking and choosing.
I have found that shopping from Amazon is cheaper than the local retailers such as HMV.
I also look carefully for albums that have been re-called as well as bootlegs.
(Which is something you cannot find on iTunes)
