also, i want to correct the ignorant people who keep saying kalamazoo has the most microbrews (seriously...). No you dont. So please stop making yourself sound dumb. Come live in GR for 6 months, or spend time in our smaller breweries...you will finally get it.
Here is a list of places that brew IN GR:
Founders
The BOB
Vivant
Grand Rapids Brewing Company
Harmony
Hideout
HopCat
Jaden James
New Holland (yes its Holland, but its GR)
Pike 51
Perrin
Rockford Brewing (Again, not GR but dang close enough!)
The Mitten
Schmohz
White flame
So...yeah kzoo does not out do GR. and if y'all have more, please list. (and not stores/bars)
Steve S.. - 12 years ago
Seriously, GR is it all the way!! Have you been here??
Valerie - 12 years ago
Seriously y'all! I get people like the beer in Kzoo and I do not aruge that you guys have good beer. I love bells; it is a staple of my beer diet. But you are wasting your vote. Grand Rapids tied with Ashville, NC last year (techincally I think they won by a 1 or 2 %. So get with it, and lets stand behind Grand Rapids. We have the titles of #1 beer store IN THE US ( sicilianos - on lake mi drive ) and the #3 beer bar IN THE WORLD (Hopcat - downtown GR), on top of out numbering Kalamazoo with smaller breweries. (I really have no idea how many they have, maybe 4 or 5, and GR has >20). We know Michigan, and even more localized, West Michigan is where all the GOOD beer in this world is made, but instead of spliting our vote and killing west michigan's chance of losing this title, VOTE FOR GRAND RAPIDS! It is a proper strategy in a place it needs to be. And lets face it, Grand Rapids is an actually city. Kalamazoo is pretty much a college town with a lot of people in it. And the economy is WAY better in Grand Rapids. What kalamazoo has over GR is GOOD PLACES to DRINK beer. Shakespears, the beer exchange, etc. In GR, its either a brewery, a dive, or a club...so dispite that fact, DONT SEPERATE THE VOTES PEOPLE!!!

Grand Rapids is of course the only choice in this contest. My best wishes to those who will undoubtedly be runners up.

Who can argue with Kalamazoo?? If you have not had a Bells beer or Old Peninsula... You are missing out people!
david - 12 years ago
One word: Wicked Weed. Newest brewery in Asheville, and its in a completely different league than any other American brewery that exists, even amongst the other greats in Asheville. You'd swear your drinking on tap imports straight from Belgium. For that reason alone Asheville deserves the vote.

Crap... I love Kzoo and Bell's (I'm currently drinking an Oberon actually) but it's going to take votes from Grand Rapids which I think is the clear winner. Michigan Beers, gotta love 'em!
Kathy h - 12 years ago
Most definitely Grand Rapids!
Action - 12 years ago
I love Bells and live right between Kzoo and GR. Been to both many times. Bells ranks right up there with Founders, Perrin, and Vivant, but as a city GR is better Beer City - by far. Take Bells away from Kzoo and there is little left. Take any one of the others away from GR and they STILL would have a good chance at winning this thing.
M balfour - 12 years ago
GR is the one! There are so many great places.
Jarrod - 12 years ago
Love me some Lexington Avenue Brewery and Green Man Brewing in Asheville, NC!!! Bring home the gold!!!
Founders, Grand Rapids Brewing, The Mitten, Perrin, HopCat, Brewery Vivant, New Holland, Hideout, Harmony, Schmohz, Jaden James, Pike 51, White Flame, and soon Osgood... yes some of them may be newer, but the fact that it is usually very hard to get a table at majority of these places at any time shows how Grand Rapids supports these local places and how amazing this community has come together to thrive in such hard years. BEER CITY USA 2013 most definitely need to be Grand Rapids :)

Go Asheville! New home to Oskar Blues, Sierra Nevada AND New Belgium!
Stephie - 12 years ago
Kalamazoo is phenomenal for its local beer culture. In addition to the Nationally acclaimed Bells we have Old Peninsula, Old Dog Tavern and many other breweries in the surrounding area that helps to support the local beer culture. Lest not forget The Beer Exchange, rated as one of the top bars in Michigan!!
Jon - 12 years ago
The best local beer is whatever beer is on tap where you hang your hat. With that said, my heart belongs to Asheville!
Jeanie - 12 years ago
I've never been to many of these places.. but Asheville NC (my home) has Highland, Greenman, Pisgah, French Broad and Asheville Brewing Companies. There's also the Wedge, Lab, and Wicked Weed that make their own brews. Plus Sierra Nevada and New Belgium are moving here. We're kind of a big deal.

From the trickling negative impact of a failing auto industry came an amazingly modernized Grand Rapids City from which not many people saw coming. Among many other monumental uprisings, Micro brewing seems to have really risen from the long worn depths of economic turmoil across grand rapids

Kalamazoo, MI all the way, and not just because I'm a local. There's places on this list with MORE breweries, but Kalamazoo definitely has the BEST. The scene in this town is electric - there is no place better to enjoy the nightlife with some of the best brews around.
Christina - 12 years ago
Kalamazoo!!!! Can't you hear the BELL'S ringing ?!?
Asheville is the best beer city. Do you see any other craft breweries going out of their way to open new breweries in Grand Rapids? Of course not. The Asheville beer scene continues to grow and once again Asheville will win. Vote for the winning choice, vote Asheville!
Michael - 12 years ago
Like others have said Michigan is just a great beer state (and a great state in general for that matter). The Bell's brewery is incredible and every beer lover should make the trip at some point but as a whole city there is no town that lives and breathes craft beer and brewing like Grand Rapids!
Mac - 12 years ago

Been all over including Asheville. Had good beer there. It paled in comparison to the many awesome establishments in Grand Rapids. The vibe and enthusiasm are unmatched. I went to five different and recommended pubs in Asheville on a Thursday night. Most were like a morgue. By comparison, places like Founders, Brewery Vivant, Perrin, Grand Rapids Brewing, Harmony and The Mitten are busy to the point of standing room only on a MONDAY! There is absolutely no comparison. It is the Rapids hands down!
