Hello,
I grew up in Kalamazoo, now live in Denver and have spent lots of time in a number of the other cites considered on this list including: Cleveland, Chicago, Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor, Ashville, and Ft. Collins.
I may be bias, but I would say that Kalamazoo has the best Beer scene for the size of the town. Arcadia festival creek site would be a great place to host this with the proximity to fantastic breweries such as Bells, Old Peninsula, and the future sites of Arcadia, and Boatyard Brewing. Not to mention the unique and great bars that focus on microbrew beer such as the Beer Exchange, Shakespears, Central City Taphouse, etc.

I vote Grand Rapids! I lived in West Michigan for 20 years, and it's a great place if you love beer, Kalamazoo is just a short trip down the road anyways! You can enjoy both of these places in a very short time!
Asheville is a beautiful city also, and good beer destination! I have lived in NC the last 7 years and this place has really grown on me. THe mountains in western NC are gorgeous, however I must side with GR.
Best of luck to all!

Hey Asheville- It's about quality, not quantity. Go GR!!
Ben Barr - 13 years ago
Asheville, without a doubt!!! If you factor in a minimum of 16 breweries in 2013, plus there's always more coming, and not even counting the new East Coast breweries of New Belgium, Sierra Nevada and Oscar Blues. Then, you add in the incredible beer-centric roster of hundreds of great local Asheville bars and restaurants, with huge menus of local, national and international beers (Ex. "The Thirsty Monk"- three locations, with the original on two floors, housing one of the Best Belgian beer bars in the country on one level and a great Best of National Microbrews selection on the other, plus one of the other locations has its own micro brewery). In addition, add to the reasons list the great nationally renowned annual Beer Festivals here, such as the Winter Warmer Fest, the Beer City Festival and the Brewgrass Festival, as well as smaller fests, such as the Oktoberfest. Asheville is not done or resting on laurels either; more is coming and new developments or expansions are continuing to be planned! Regardless, the most important consideration is to continue to enjoy & support all of the great beer cities on the list, but Asheville does deserve strong consideration to continue to be recognized as Beer City USA!!!

Big Tom's comment covers it. Asheville's craft beer scene is so strong that New Belgium, Sierra Nevada and Oskar Blues brought their east coast operations here! many brew masters from other known breweries moved here to work for our awesome SMALL breweries! not to mention the best of what makes this BEER CITY USA for the past 4 years are the breweries that have no distribution and their success isnt measured in growth but rather in consistency and quality. local hops farms, and the culture win out for sure... that being said BELLS and STONE are two of my fav's out there and they deserve a high five and credit where due. ASHEVILLE though WOO!

Asheville in the mountains. Here's why we are Beer City 4 years running.(congrats to GR for tying last year, your beers are great!) I can walk to 6 breweries in under 20 minutes,(soon to be 9) and in under 10 minutes visit 4 more in the car or any of our beer buses. Sierra and New Belgian are building here. That'll be 15 breweries in a city of some 78,000 residents. West Asheville, Black Mtn,, and Weaverville. all right next to us, (as in next door) bring that to eighteen within a 15 mile circle. And did I mention that we're about to get a CSA brewery too? (look it up). We have many beer bars carrying micros from all over. WE can get Michigan beers every day, can Michigan get ours? As was said, soon we'll be able to canoe to three breweries within 20 minutes. We can choose between 125-150 local beers any day, every day.
