KALAMAZOO is truly the micro-brew capitol of the nation, thanks to BELL'S which has attracted other breweries to the area. This Festival City hosts fantastic ethnic and music gatherings at its downtown Arcadia site and the beer tent is the most popular venue at every festival. KALAMAZOO is upwardly mobile, with a broad spectrum of beer enthusiasts beginning with university and college students all the way up to retirees, like me. I would like to nominate Lincoln Illinois. I know it's not on the list, but it really is the center of beer drinking in the world. Some of the crickers (keg party at the creek) live in community memory beyond history. One particular shindig lasted three days and averaged over a half a keg per reveler. The creek was yellow for a week. We kept the generator going and the music never ended. Three different deer came out of the woods and asked us to turn it down. We said no we're doe deca hedonists, and they where squares. The cops showed up a couple times and kept the sobriatists at bay for us. Really. Stop drinking beer? Might as well stop breathing. Those guys belong on the ID 10 T form. And as far as water is concerned, are you kidding, fish ffffffffffunction in it. Beer, it's not just for drinking. Oh wait, it is.

To all the people bickering that Kzoo has Bells, but GR has Founders, its not a difficult determination. Take Bells and Founders out of the mix, who is the better beer city based on the rest of what they have? GR Brewing Co. is an awesom place, but it certainly doesn't match up to the Beer Exchange. Then again, neither can beat Vivant, and so on. It's a pretty straight forward answer to me, but I live in one of the two, which brings me to my next point:
To everyone - never realized this campaign was based off an internet popularity contest, I thought it was based on some objective criteria. This fact, to me, means it really doesn't matter what city wins, as all this really shows is which city has the most beer lovers willing to fight for their city. I'd really be interested to see how many votes come from outside these cities, and of those votes, which were case by people not originally from one of the cities.
I - 12 years ago
Is this the actual website to vote or is this some scam from a news agency trying to do a mock 'poll' so they can report on it? ... to have all of the messages say GR seems suspicious... and this definitely does not look as professional or official as I expected. Alright Kzoo and GR folks. Let's not bicker about who killed who, this should be a happy occasion! Two West Michigan cities in the running! Making us possibly the best brewing region in the country (especially when you add in New Holland, Arcadia, and several others in the region). Fat Tire and Sierra Nevada shouldn't add to Ashville's luster - one's a Colorado brewery and the other California. That's like putting Pittsburg in the running because Sam Adams contracts out to a brewery there. Ditto for Oskar Blues (also from Colorado) if they build a brewery in Ashville. Ashville can stand on its own home-grown breweries, and we'll stand on ours.

According to the Bell's Brewery tour, their downtown Kalamazoo brewery is still the 3rd largest in the state.
The largest brewery in Michigan, according to Bell's, is their facility in the adjacent community of Comstock Township (Galesburg mailing address). They didn't expand in downtown Kalamazoo, because there wasn't space for it (surrounded by railroad tracks on three sides), unless they wanted to remove the beer garden.

scramopolis - 12 years ago
Lets be honest....the industry has grown so much in GR in the last decade because GR is a wealthier area than Kalamazoo. But Bell's, OP, & Kraftbrau were brewing great stuff 20 yrs ago when Downtown GR was a ghost town and the only reason people went there was to go to work, church or the hospital.

Here is the history of Bell's for those doubting that it is indeed in Kalamazoo and that they still brew in Kalamazoo. The Comstock location was added later to accomodate the demand for distribution. It's called expansion and its what any successful brewer wants! http://www.bellsbeer.com/about/history/
-Founded by Larry Bell in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Bell's Brewery, Inc. sold its first beer in September 1985. Beer was initially brewed in a 15-gallon soup kettle and the company has grown remarkably from its production of 135 barrels (1 bbl = 31 gal.) in 1986 to a capacity of more than 500,000 barrels today.
Originally self-distributed, Larry and his staff of 9 employees bottled and delivered all of the beer to market during the company's first four years. By 1989, Bell's was shipping over 500 barrels annually and assigned its first wholesaler to further establish itself across the state of Michigan. In 1993, Bell's became the first Michigan brewery to open an onsite pub.
After struggling several years to produce and sell robust, full-bodied ales against a tide of mass-market domestic beer, Bell's began to see the demand for craft beer grow dramatically and expanded into new markets. Bell's currently sells beer across an 18-state area in addition to Puerto Rico and Washington DC through a network of more than 60 quality wholesalers.
In 2003, Bell's opened a new brewery in nearby Comstock. This facility has now seen five expansions since then.
I love Bell's and Kzoo but have to vote for GR. There is a THRIVING beer community that is more than just the breweries we support. Bike races sponsored by breweries, year round beer centric activities, Founders work with the GR Whitewater movement. On and on and on

@Beer Connoisseur - There is absolutely no need for you to continue to spread misinformation that you have been corrected on about a dozen times on this forum to move the vote. Vote for your own, its fine. That's what we are all doing. Everyone knows that Bell's started in Kalamazoo and is where Bell's Eccentric Cafe stands today, right in the heart of downtown Kalamazoo at 355 E. Kalamazoo Ave.,
Kalamazoo, Michigan. It's right on their website. Anyone can Google it and find out about the history and growth of Bell's. Yes, there is a location about ten minutes away in Comstock that was added later on to accomodate the demand for distribution. Just like Arcadia originally wanted to be in Kalamazoo, then went to Battle Creek and is now adding another location in Kalamazoo. Doesn't mean that Arcadia is not in Battle Creek anymore just because they are building a second location in Kalamazoo. It's hard to take you seriously when you continue to spread misinformation that any true "craft beer connoisseur" would know about one of the largest, most respected craft brew distributors out there. Even people who dislike Bell's know its in Kalamazoo.

Despite expansion at our main production facility, we haven't forgotten our roots, and we continue to brew at our original location in downtown Kalamazoo. Using the same equipment that served us so well for so many years, this space has become home to several specialty projects, as well as brewing an extensive array of brands typically only available at the adjoining Eccentric Café.-
