I usually buy them online from iTunes but for the bands I really love I buy a hard copy from a record store.
Scott - 15 years ago
I try to buy from the band when I can so as much of the $ goes to the artist. Or if that's going to make me wait too long I'll buy from a record store or Amazon, whichever is cheaper.
Juanjo - 15 years ago
Well, i think there's nothing such as buying the CD at a concert, and if that is not possible pre-order it through the band's website. Ultimately, buying it at the local store.

Long live the good old record store with the dude that makes you discover new stuff and will give you good advice!

I have really become space and eco-conscious on lots of things. CDs have become one of those items that I watch. All of the packaging can be really disgusting sometimes. So, I will buy the MP3s when I can, but there are CDs still being purchased in the house. We just don't buy them as often as much as we used to. The bands that we really love are the ones that we purchase. We want that professional production that can sometimes be iffy on MP3 purchases.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this and the chance to win some great music.

I will often buy records from my local store and do try to as much as I can...but usually I find that they will not stock what I want or have items that I am not generally interested in, This is where online shopping comes in hand, I will shop on ebay most of the time and buy records there as I find the price is great, and can be a lot better than buying from you're local shop because you're able to get more of a variety which I like too have, and the pricing can often vary to being much more cheaper online, which is a good thing, because I feel then you are able to buy more records and give more bands a listen too, and discover more great bands, rather than spending $20-$30 on one record at you're local record shop and then not really liking, you can't really return to you're local shop for that reason....but with places such as ebay you're able to sell it on, you can make a profit and the person buying will make a gain in there own way...so it's a win/win situation for the seller and buyer...that's why I like too purchase online for many reasons such as that and also you're able to shop at the own comfort of you're own home and don't have to worry about the shops being open or closed at a late time or a holiday, because well....with the internet it's always open, but the only downfall I find is waiting for the item...which can be painful at times espically when pre-ordering albums from labels/bands or buying from ebay online because you just want to listen to the album already that you purchased and usually over here in Australia it can usually be a while (depending on where you might live) until we receive the records that we pre ordered to arrive in our mailbox...but the satisfaction "I" personally get from buying records from whatever format it may be (vinyl,cds...) is something that money really can't truly buy, because Whether I am buying from the label or band themselves I know I am doing a good thing...not because I know I am support small d.i.y. to big labels/bushiness's, but because I know I'm support something I truly love and most certainly don't want to see the demise of from illegal downloading or anything else for that matter anytime soon...

Mark Webb - 15 years ago
While I, too, like having some of the extras you get when buying a physical CD, I'm finding that the ease and simplicity of direct downloads to be much more convenient. There is also the added bonus of not getting stuck with songs you don't particularly like. That being said, for some of the older, more collectible stuff, you generally have better luck finding it online than in a record store. Besides, record stores are becoming harder and harder to find these days (at least where I live).
Dawn Rose - 15 years ago
Wherever is cheapest! For ease I prefer to download straight to my IPod, but I'll buy from a store only if I have money off (points card).

i usually buy my music from a local record store because they usually have what i want, but also because i like looking for unfamiliar and interesting band names and cool cover art.
Bram Simons - 15 years ago
Cool that local store still wins. Glad to hear people are actually still buying music CDs :)
Margaret Rushton - 15 years ago
My favorite local store, Newbury Comics, offers pre-orders. Many of the pre-orders are band signed. This is a great way to get autographs from my favorite bands and to support my local store.
I do have a very soft spot for pre-orders ... Getting more excited as the release date approaches ...
Gaz Woods - 15 years ago
The few CDs I buy, I get mostly off Amazon, occasionally off the Burning Shed website directly - mostly Steven Wilson related releases though. I don't buy as much music as I used to though since being unemployed has made me unable to afford it for the last year. Unless a CD is under a fiver it's a luxury I can't afford.

Really for me, Its the price that counts. That can be sales from the label, bands own site or from local retailers like Best Buy, Target or Walmart.

Wow, this surprised me.. Record stores are the most popular? Wow, there is yet hope for this industry! Let's all show our support by.. winning free music! :D
A Dramatic Turn of Events is going to be AMAZING.
Stephen Lee - 15 years ago
I used to only download it, but then since I've actually got money these days I buy them as often as I can. I'd like to be able to make it in a band someday and I can't expect others to buy my CD's if I don't buy others myself. I've got almost 100 now i think. Not band for someone who's only just turned 18 these days ;)
Robert McRary - 15 years ago
I buy from ITunes. I like their weekly email blast...I usually take a look at all the new releases on there for the week...and buy some.
O'Neillcore - 15 years ago
If I had a decent record store in my town I would buy from there, seeing as I don't Amazon is the only option.
Admittedly, I don't purchase nearly as much music as I should. I still do like maintaining a physical collection (for the packaging/artwork/etc.) for the bands I really follow and want to support, but unfortunately my local store's don't generally carry metal records, forcing me to scrouge up a credit card some how and look to the net instead.
Anyway, Opeth should be wicked, really looking forward to that one.
Kustin - 15 years ago
The first thing I do is listen to samples on iTunes/Amazon and/or stream on Spotify. If I'm happy enough, I'll buy the cd, preferably on the internet. But since I'm on a tighter budget than what a janitor might have, I look for discount prices in places.

I buy CDs online mostly or at concerts - I didn't find a record store with all the stuff I want yet sadly.
I buy CDs at my local store whenever I have the money for it. There's a great place over here that you can find literaly anything and everything, so that's my first option. Usually I don't even need to go anywhere else. But it gets expensive after a while, and I don't really have money to buy anything. Now that I've bought the In Waves Deluxe pack, I need to save up enough to buy me some Machine Head and Dream Theater :P
Since I'm a student and in the economical situation that comes with it, my first choice is Spotify. I still buy cds from those bands that I love, of course, like Opeth and Pain of Salvation.
I spent twenty years of my life as a record store manager, so I think I've been at the right place to discover new musical horizons and see all changes in Music business. My work was a passion and allowed me to share my musical tastes with a lot of people. Thanxs to my job I was able to buy albums at reasonable prices and build some solid record collection. Since I left it appeared to me I wasn't going to be able to continue to buy as many albums as in the past, because of the still expensive prices. So I began to act like everyone : download.... This word had been banned from my vocabulary for many years, but I had to resign. The only way I could still have the new albums coming out was downloading them. But I wasn't happy because I hadn't the physial product in my hands... So I naturally decided to keep downl. the albums I was interested in, and if those were really worth the buy, then I would wait and buy them on Amazon (or sometimes E-bay) for a decent price. So I'm still able to grow my collection monthly, share my passion with friends, thanxs to technology. I'd like to thank you guys from RR for all the hard work done to resurrect this mythic label. I remembered buying great Metal albums in the '80's from RR like Mercyful Fate, Raven, Anvil, the unique "Creepin Death" 12" single, and then later all the King Diamond 12"s and lp's, with these beautiful pic discs, and the amazing sound quality ! I still have copies of early RR newspapers, and it still is a immense pleasure to read them today!
I just read canadian prog rockers Rush signed with RR for the next album... Well, this is maybe the best news of the year, because it shows the diversity of the rejuvenited label, but also its quality with bands like Rush deciding to join all others artists already present in your catalogue.
2011 will undoubtly be another great RR year, with new albums coming soon by Megadeth, Opeth, Machine Head and Dream Theater. Keep on doin' what you do best, promote quality music in a serious way!
I'll ore order the album, then buy it on iTunes so I have a CD also. Then if the album had special edition packages, I'll buy them. Like I bought both editions of UNTO THE LOCUST, the CD/DVD combo and the Metal Hammer pack. But I drive a minivan with a CD player so I always get CD's.

I'm middle class, live in Brazil, and used to be a cd addict. My allowance got short and i'm without a job at the moment, plus i want to invest on music gear, so i only buy cd's from my favorite bands and AFTER listening to mp3. I also buy cd's that are "on sale", which here in Brazil is about U$ 9. I will never, ever again pay U$ 23 dollars for a new cd.
Record Companies have no shame in their faces charging us this amount of money. Just for you to have an idea i paid U$ 66 for the Systematic Chaos cd at the time, and it was already from Roadrunner Records. A company that should have (although it doesn't) different policies on their relationship with their customers, since it's (suposedly) a company with attitude and all.
All in all, since we, the fans, now know the income from our favorite bands comes pretty much from their shows, and some of us are tired of lame-ass propaganda about our favorite musicians and bands, i'd suggest you to stream all albums before releasing it. And also to show a good will to your customers you COULD release 90kbps .mp3 of each album you put on the market. It's a crappy quality, but this way you will be fair, and then (ONLY THEN) people who don't buy the cd's will be assholes.
Times have changed, and we now deserve a little respect, both from the record companies and from the artists (which are kinda needing to step off their altars and relate to us). Bottom line is only the well-intended will 'survive' these new times. My best wishes on Roadrunner artists goes to Opeth, for Mikael being the nicest guy, for Periphery, for being the present and future of music (in every sense), and for the new Dream Theater, which i love some of the new music, but still have some reservations on the fake way they treat their fans (expect for JR and a little bit for JP).
well i think streaming is just fine for someone looking to be turned onto something new. Buying a CD from a band at a show is great if they are local and/or unsigned. Personally i think concert merch is sooooooo ridiculously over priced now a-days i won't even bother to go by the booth and if i do i treat it as a trip to the Louvre. Buying music from itunes /amazon/best buy/ label sites is great. I like to pay a reasonable price for music ...particularly because i do tend to spend a majority of my paychecks on music. Given i love music ( and eclectically) ,...it's just evil !!! hahah What's worse is someone who would dare to call them selves a fan and not own a single album. Illegal downloading doesn't count! If rock n' roll is a religion,...than THAT is just rock n' roll blasphemy.
kevin
PS...i already own Trivium's In Waves...but would be thrilled to get the awseome new masterpieces of DREAM THEATER/MACHINE HEAD/and OPETH, as well as a break for my pocket book for once as i probably already bought 65%-75% of the roadrunner catalogue. THANX IN ADVANCE

I usually buy it from the label or band's website or Amazon...but I've been known to buy stuff from iTunes as well...I support both digital AND physical music...though I'm trying my hardest to help keep physical releases alive!
Francisco Ortega - 15 years ago
I always liked to buy music from the store near my house, but Ipod was invented, so, now I buy all the music from Itunes store. I feel is better to have phisically a cd or vinyl, because of the sensation of unenvelop that new record, and a record always comes with its album art, pictures of your favorite artist, and you can read the letters of their songs. I want to thank Roadrunner records for giving us the opportunity to express our own words, and for maintainig us informed about our favorite artists.

I only buy hardcopies of albums I love or are from my favorite bands. Normally I just buy everything from iTunes. It's convenient and with homes wring it's it's easy to get it on all my devices.
Eric Aug - 15 years ago
I generally buy from an online retailer like amazon mp3 download cuz it's fast and easy. But if it's a band i really like and I want the artwork and liner notes i usually pre-order it from the bands website.

My favorite place to buy music is at the show. Plenty of the big festivals like Uproar give you a chance to get autographs if you buy an album. Two of my favorite pieces of memorabilia are my signed CDs from Stone Sour and Hellyeah!

Despite primarily listening to my music in iTunes or on my iPhone, I still prefer to purchase CDs.

I prefer trying to preorder music, its pretty cool to get it as soon as it comes out, that way you dont have to fight with the crowd for it. Especially the deluxe packs. I have yet to get one, but i know a friend that has gotten one and he was excited.
Anyways, good luck to everyone!

I ALWAYS buy my music. Whether that be from Amazon, or from Walmart, I will always get the physical copy. Without the ability to put a CD into a disc-drive anywhere I go, it just seems like a waste.

I would love to buy music from my local record store, but it doesn't exist. All that's left around here is FYE, which is horribly overpriced anyway. So I usually stick to Amazon. I've also made some killings going to street fairs in NYC.

Hi! I'm from Russia and we have bad situation with buying CD's here. Only in big cities you can easily find license production, but if you want originals you must to order from the band's or label's website. In stores prices for original CD's are very big. In towns (I live in small town) in stores sells only pirate production in mp3 and sometimes if you haven't Internet you also haven't choise. I buy CD's from from the band's or label's website if I really like band and want to have physical copy of CD. I have many CD's at home, mostly I buy them from label Darknagar Records and from band's websites.

Local music stores are the best. Especially those small metal ones that carry the more unknown-hard to get stuff.
Maximo Zambrano - 15 years ago
If your a true fan of any of those awsome bands above you would pre order the album from the bands or labels website. In order to keep our favorite genre of music going we need to buy it directly from the source...go to every concert...destroy everything in the pits...scream, and go absolutly insane....and finally raise those f****** horns.
Corey Parker - 15 years ago
I go for amazon or bestbuy for my music. Sometimes at band's websites if there on sell.
Steve - 15 years ago
I will always support local record stores!!! I love the whole experience of buying an album from the store -- it's unlike anything else. If you purchase an mp3 off iTunes, you just click and then you're done. Lame. I love the experience of driving to the record store and browsing through the new releases and asking the guy behind the counter what he recommends. There's a sense of community at a record store, and you can't find that on Amazon or iTunes. Record stores for life!!! P.S. - I would love to win that pack of 4 albums!

I like going to the store to pick up a CD. I like holding it in my hands!

I absolutely can't wait for Dream Theater's new album. I pre-ordered the special edition from JB Hi-Fi. I usually buy directly from the artists' website though.

I gotta have a physical copy, I'm too paranoid that I'll accidentally delete the files.
Chris W. - 15 years ago
I try to find hard copies in stores, but I'll use iTunes if I can't find an album at a store in my city.
Jewbacca - 15 years ago
As often as I can I buy from the artist at the show, or through their website or label, but the latter is becoming less and less of an option because I don't always want the deluxe, ultra, mega-special edition. I'd much rather buy from a local shop but in my area they don't exist anymore. So it's iTunes or BestBuy. Sucks, but such is life.
Thomas Welch - 15 years ago
I buy music from Napster, Itunes, and my local cd stores, but I believe the best way is to buy from the artists at the shows. I've gone to over 300 live shows in my life, and have over 200 autographed cds. I hope I pass from this life at a Metal Show!!!
Shane - 15 years ago
I have to have hard copies. I'll copy all of my stuff to the computer and what not but I love my cd's from the music store. The pics, the lyrics... Plus they just sound better.
Brian - 15 years ago
Store or amazon, but heck i have got some cd at the shows as well, they are usually cheaper there XD
Michael - 15 years ago
Buying from a local record shop is my preferred method but that is getting harder and harder as more of them close their doors. Amazon is good for finding decent prices and import versions with bonus tracks. If I know that I am going to see a band soon I will wait and buy at the show hoping that they get a little more of the profit that way.

Dream theater and machine head can i get a fuck yea!!!

I would definitely buy my music directly from the band, especially from a good live show. If that's not possible, I'll settle for the cd store or iTunes.
Sometimes you score some limited edition stuff at stores or shows like tshirts and random crap.
Looking forward to Machine Head's new release. Last one was amazing. This new one will melt faces!

I typically get CD's from iTunes or Amazon based on pricing or if I have a gift card. In the Chicago area, Rolling Stones record store is still prevalent so sometimes I make a trip for old times sake.
I am probably one of the original Dream Theater fans as I bought When Dream And Day Unite after my friend played the Ytse Jam for me back around 1990.
Prior to DT joining RoadRunner, I was familiar with the label because I used to buy all of the King Diamond albums.
I hope RoadRunner will continue to add some progressive rock and metal artists to their catalog.

Wow, this surprised me.. Record stores are the most popular? Wow, there is yet hope for this industry! Let's all show our support by.. winning free music! :D
A Dramatic Turn of Events is going to be AMAZING.
I used to only download it, but then since I've actually got money these days I buy them as often as I can. I'd like to be able to make it in a band someday and I can't expect others to buy my CD's if I don't buy others myself. I've got almost 100 now i think. Not band for someone who's only just turned 18 these days ;)
I buy from ITunes. I like their weekly email blast...I usually take a look at all the new releases on there for the week...and buy some.
The first thing I do is listen to samples on iTunes/Amazon and/or stream on Spotify. If I'm happy enough, I'll buy the cd, preferably on the internet. But since I'm on a tighter budget than what a janitor might have, I look for discount prices in places.
I buy CDs in big music store in Prague. Unfortunately, CDs are more expensive in Prague... :-(
i buy cds from amazon.uk
the prices in greek stores are very high
i buy cd only in my little local stores ... only original cds...
-:D
I buy my favorite albums online.. often on play.com.. I still buy cds of bands that I love.. Dream Theater, Alter Bridge and Opeth :)
Since I'm a student and in the economical situation that comes with it, my first choice is Spotify. I still buy cds from those bands that I love, of course, like Opeth and Pain of Salvation.
SKULL FIST!!!!!!
Keep on doin' what you do best, promote quality music in a serious way!
fuck yes,
I'll ore order the album, then buy it on iTunes so I have a CD also. Then if the album had special edition packages, I'll buy them. Like I bought both editions of UNTO THE LOCUST, the CD/DVD combo and the Metal Hammer pack. But I drive a minivan with a CD player so I always get CD's.
Usually from the band at a show. Cant wait to hear the new Opeth!
I always buy from the shows and from my local record shops, to help keep the industry going :D
Just bought the In Waves CD/DVD digipak from a local store.
I wish everywhere had a Newbury Comics!
I still prefer physical copies of most CDs so I generally buy at local stores.
Exclusively hard copy, whether at gigs or through local retailers.
I buy music in pretty much all of the ways listed. By any means necessary!
I only buy hardcopies of albums I love or are from my favorite bands. Normally I just buy everything from iTunes. It's convenient and with homes wring it's it's easy to get it on all my devices.
My local record store has a great metal section including used albums for reasonable prices.
I want those four albums.
A comment is required to enter the giveaway.
I love to buy CDs it is a great feeling to hold them in your hand and to open them and look at the cool artwork in the booklet and on the CD
I buy music from Hasting and the local pawn shop (which also happens to be the local used music store)
I would love to buy music from my local record store, but it doesn't exist. All that's left around here is FYE, which is horribly overpriced anyway. So I usually stick to Amazon. I've also made some killings going to street fairs in NYC.
I live in a small town so I drive 240 miles, round trip to buy music. I have about 3000 vinyl's and maybe 1800 cds. I even have a few casette tapes, about 3 * tracks and maybe 60 45's..I LOVE MUSIC! cannot get enough \m/ !
If your a true fan of any of those awsome bands above you would pre order the album from the bands or labels website. In order to keep our favorite genre of music going we need to buy it directly from the source...go to every concert...destroy everything in the pits...scream, and go absolutly insane....and finally raise those f****** horns.
I go for amazon or bestbuy for my music. Sometimes at band's websites if there on sell.
I try to find hard copies in stores, but I'll use iTunes if I can't find an album at a store in my city.
I buy music from Napster, Itunes, and my local cd stores, but I believe the best way is to buy from the artists at the shows. I've gone to over 300 live shows in my life, and have over 200 autographed cds. I hope I pass from this life at a Metal Show!!!
I have to have hard copies. I'll copy all of my stuff to the computer and what not but I love my cd's from the music store. The pics, the lyrics... Plus they just sound better.
Store or amazon, but heck i have got some cd at the shows as well, they are usually cheaper there XD
Buying from a local record shop is my preferred method but that is getting harder and harder as more of them close their doors. Amazon is good for finding decent prices and import versions with bonus tracks. If I know that I am going to see a band soon I will wait and buy at the show hoping that they get a little more of the profit that way.
Roadrunner Rocks!
\m/ \m/
i like to buy from a record store rather from amazon or itunes. i'm one of those people who like to have the album in thier hands but when it's an exclusive to itunes or amazon i have no choice but to buy from there
hi every1, I buy my cds from record stores, from concerts I rock out at ,from amazon.com.I also buy from garage sales ..I actually bought 4 cds yesterday all used mint condition of Janes Addiction Nothings Shocking ,a Led Zeppelin picture disc with a Zep medley and the song called The Girl I Love,Little Feat Waiting For Columbus & Manowar Warriors Of THE WORLD all for $1.29 each. All from The Salvation Army Store in Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn NY 11235. I also buy cds from garage sales and Ebay as well used and new .Dont make a diff to me as long as they play well and I can put em on my ipod im good to go .I listen to music all day long .Im an exterminator for the Dept of Education in NYC .I enjoy listening to music ,bangin my head and bangin out bugs.Killing is my game and business is good Keep on rockin guys Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah
I usually buy CD's and rip em to MP3 but if I can't find the CD I'll get it from amazon
Absolutely cannot wait for the new Dream Theater album! Most definitely a day one buy for me!(will more thank likely pick it up at my local Best Buy)
Love going to the store and looking for the next cd for my collection.
I usually get my cd's online but I too support my local record stores. I remember buying my first album of KISS at a local record store! Love the music!
I always buy my cd's from my local jb hi fi store and support the the bands that give us this awesome music!
metal all the way!
I pre-order to get it first and usually there is something thrown in (i.e. t-shirt) which is cool.
I try to support local stores because they tend to special order things that wal-mart or some of the chain stores wont. Band and label websites are awesome too!!
I do my best to give the bands all that they work for & deserve (album/merch/shows) bcuz I/we, in reality, owe them so much ... I was thinkin about how much I love music & how there is no better past time & how many songs are tied to memories , which led me to having an even greater appreciation for the artists and labels.
Kirstin
a true metal fan!
I actually make it a priority try to preorder the album (cd/dvd are the best) from the artists/label websites (the trivium roadrunner preorder @ mayhem came with a meet & greet & signed poster which was our highlight of the day & the machine head/metal hammer team up was a genius move & I still preordered from roadrunner/mayhem too ... for the dvd) but if I cant preorder then I buy the albums at zia or itunes !
-------------------------ROAD RUNNER ARE THE BEST BY FAR!-----------------------------------------
I
I generally buy cds from Amazon. Pre-order from wherever I can get the best pre-order deal. And so on. Don't use iTunes as much anymore.
I prefer having the CDs, so I usually get them from local retailers. I like a lot of the album art and such. It's a shame there aren't many places to buy CDs left near me.
I still buy CDs, either from locally-owned shops (Reckless Records in Chicago), Amazon, or the band at their shows. I can't stand not having a physical copy of an album with the artwork and liner notes.
Hard copies, always. I love reading liner notes, and looking at cool album covers.
