I get most of my music on CD through Amazon.com now a days.
Robert - 15 years ago
I still prefer to have a physical copy of the cd in my hands over mp3s or itunes. I have always enjoyed checking out the liner notes, lyrics, and artwork that comes with the cd. Thats why I buy from local cd shops, pre-order from the label or band websites, or even buy from amazon or ebay.
Phillip Bristo - 15 years ago
I usually buy my music from amazon.com ever since they closed the Sam Goody in our mall. Lately though I've been buying music on iTunes through my iPhone.
Mostly MP3's from Amazon because they're convenient. However, I'm not a big fan of the compression, so I try to buy the CD if it's close in price. I still like having the media in my hands - then I can do whatever I want with it.
Sharas - 15 years ago
I usually win albums... Or buy them at the gigs.
Federico Sala - 15 years ago
I prefer to buy from my local store because for me is a pleasure can choose and touch directly The cd !
Jeff F. - 15 years ago
I like to have a physical copy in lossless because I have OCD. Also, YEA DREAM THEATER!!!!!
Don - 15 years ago
I buy from the bands at the concerts or target or my local used music store, whom has the new cd's barely used for a lot less than the commercial retailers.
John Perry - 15 years ago
Sometimes I just download them...
Simon - 15 years ago
I usually buy my CDs from retail stores around my area, such as Best Buy and Target. I also go online and buy digital albums from iTunes and Amazon.com. Of course, Dream Theater is one of my favorite Roadrunner bands. Can't wait for their new album to come out!
Eric Belseth - 15 years ago
I always buy my cds from Newbury Comics....simply the greatest store ever! If I'm in a rush then I will buy off of iTunes.
Ryan Harrigan - 15 years ago
I love interacting with the band's websites and the ease of streaming the music. I mostly buy the music after an amazing performance. There's nothing like that raw excitement of blaring the artist's music after the show.
Ice Tremorz - 15 years ago
Back in the day there was always a couple of small record stores that you would get your music from, meet friends there and talk music. They are all gone thanks to Target and Walmart. It was very cool to meet up with people in the store on release days, buying the same music. i agree with a lot of you posting, there is nothing like holding and reading the insert from the CD or record while listening to the music the first time. Preferably with headphones!
Phil - 15 years ago
For my favorite bands, I always get deluxe editions of the albums either in a store or pre-ordered online. Other than that I'll buy albums from iTunes because they often have extra tracks and cool stuff like that as well.
Peter - 15 years ago
I do not prefer digital distibution.. i will never do
to hold a LP/CD, look over booklet.. that is something special..
(I do not understand that some people buy only some tracks from album..
of course, for scrap like Lady Gaga Baba Jaga.. and other shit, it is suitable)
Chris - 15 years ago
I usually buy from Amazon because the prices are better, but mostly because I usually can't find the album I'm looking for in a local store.
Silb - 15 years ago
I prefer cds!
Josh - 15 years ago
I prefer to buy actual cds still, but the only time I'll pick any up at the local music store is if it's a brand new album. Otherwise they charge way too much.

I always buy physical CDs, collecting CDs is one of my greatest hobbies
Mario A - 15 years ago
I preorder the physical CDs from Amazon if they are special editions with bonus material, like a CD/DVD package. If it's a run of the mill album, nothing extra, I'll buy it digitally from Amazon or iTunes, whichever is cheaper. Amazon's Cloud Service is very convenient.
Xavier - 15 years ago
Sadly local shops sell mostly commercial stuff and specialized shop are often overpriced due to the fact that online retailer are cheaper ..
Jorge Rios - 15 years ago
I prefer having the physical copy of every CD, and it always helps when buying it at a show directly from a band.
hans van den hoek - 15 years ago
when I was young and there was no internet I bought almost everything in the cdstores. nowadays i buy my music in cdstores but also on the webpages of cdstores. sometimes I order them directly at the bandwebpage (but I did that only once yet.) and when I do like the music and they sell there cd's at a concert I buy them and try then to let them autograph it as well. so this is mainly the way I buy my cd's. thanks roadrunner for asking. this was a very interesting poll especially because we are on the edge of a new time that there will not be many recordstores left. so it's interesting to see where everybody is buying there cd's.
Tiffany - 15 years ago
Usually at shows, pre-order from the label, or iTunes it. I prefer physical cds to downloads, though.
Knives - 15 years ago
I usually buy music from amazon.com in the form of CD's. I am not a fan of downloading mp3's although once I purchase the CD, I will convert them to lossless.
B Wood - 15 years ago
Amazon has so much variety all in one place, which makes it an easy place to shop, but I try to keep my purchases a little closer to the bone, i.e., artists, labels, local record stores, etc. when possible. Dream Theater and Opeth are so awesome!
Madiha Ijaz - 15 years ago
Personally I love to have the actual record. I either pre-order from Amazon, buy it at the local shop or at a gig (which I'm doing more often because the support bands have been amazing) I don't really download songs digitally. I think it's because when i'm at the gig I could try and get at least signature on the cd cover or something
Cliff - 15 years ago
I usually prefer to own the actual CD, and find Amazon is as easy and convenient a way to buy my favourite music.

Teresa - 15 years ago
One option that's missing...Big Box Store (BB). To me, they're not really a "local" record store. 90% of the time, I buy a physical copy at a store. I only pre-order from band sites if it wont be available at an actual store or they are offering a different version I cant get in a store. If I order from amazon.com, it's usually something older and in turn, cheaper. Heck, I still buy certain pieces of old and new vinyl too.
Janet Oberfoell - 15 years ago
I buy from Amazon. I don't have a local record shop in my small town, so my choices are limited.
wojciech - 15 years ago
I try to get CDS on Amozon or in local shops. Some stuff I buy on websites like Emusic.com. From time to time I buy stuff directly from artists.
Timothy Kelsall - 15 years ago
I own an iPod but only buy tracks that are unavailable on the actual CD. I always buy the CD or Special/Deluxe Edition and put it on my iPod. I like having the artwork and lyrics. Plus if you have the actual CD you can take it to a show and possibly get it signed.
Rúben Monteiro - 15 years ago
I usually buy the albums in the stores but I also use iTunes
Enrique - 15 years ago
I always buy at a physical store, I enjoy browsing for my CDs.

Glad to see so many agree with needed to the actual CD in our hands. I enjoy buying the CDs from a record store (I can talk to the cashier about music!). I openly shame thoughs who use torrents and I dislike (but am willing to resort to) buying music from Amazon (no downloads). All the bands I fanstize about being in never sell music on itunes and any other download medium.

I buy at my local recordstore since I like to own the CD's I enjoy
Chris - 15 years ago
I like to support local shops, even though they are becoming a thing of the past. I also like to use Amazon and Secondspin.com.
Dan - 15 years ago
I almost always buy my music from Amazon.com mp3 store. Can't beat the prices, quality is great. I used to buy physical cd's all the time, until I realized I was running out of room and I'd only actually look at the booklet a few times.
Dan - 15 years ago
Dream Theater is amazing! Definitely buying A Dramatic Turn of Events at a local store!
Joe - 15 years ago
I usually each CD twice, one from iTunes and the physical disc(s) from Amazon or from the label's website. I'll also occasionally order from The End Records.
Ed Henning - 15 years ago
I buy music anyway I can. Mostly Emusic,Amazon,or my local recordstore. I have a addiction for new stuff. My wife thinks I am sick. I can think of worse things to be addicted to.Music is my addiction.

I prefer last.fm radio :)
Kameron Gibler - 15 years ago
I fully enjoy the work that is known to us as Dream Theater. Good luck everyone!

It comes down to what is easy and cheaper.
It is easier and cheaper for me to buy CDs at a place like Amazon where there are so many choices for what I am looking for rather than to go somewhere to find and buy one CD.
Alex - 15 years ago

I prefer buying from the band's web site or from a show, because that's usually how they get the largest return from the sale. I do miss buying in the stores, but they don't carry what I like...
I think more people should get out there and buy the artists' albums ... too much sharing out there! It's not cheap for the bands to make an album ...

I am a sucker for cheap used rare out of print cds. and i love the fact that online retailers can offer these for "I can't afford not to" prices.... but knowing that this cash doesn't go to the band is a concern. And i don't want to have to worry about alchohol swabbing my used cds... Online retailers are great but who are we supporting ?

I still buy cd's and I don't intend to stop! I wish I had a record store nearby, but buying the band's album at their show is a good way to get it autographed! TRIVIUM!!!
I listen to Last.fm, download from the net, buy what I like from bol.com, band's webstores or in my local recordstore or wherever I can find them. I don't do the iTunes-thing
Who has local record stores anymore? That's where i would buy music if i could. Otherwise, it's Amazon.com for me, or the artist's web site directly, or whatever netlabel has great new music out.
Paulo Neto - 15 years ago
I usually buy from my local store, but bands that I like(Trivium, Dream Theater, Transatlantic, etc) are really rare to find at here...
Phil - 15 years ago
I only wish there were more stores around to buy music from.
Hey guys!,
Love all the work you guys do to really fine-tune your marketing strategies! I wanted to say that regarding your survey as to where I buy my music, I would buy from a local music store but there aren't any in NYC anymore with the exception of some shops that focus on hipster music as opposed to hard rock and metal. The other thing is that I REFUSE to buy anything from iTunes because of all of their restrictions. I'd rather buy from Amazon or on BandCamp. BandCamp is great because all the money goes to the bands who are the ones that need it most when they are unsigned. I usually buy a cd because I still love the art work and if my computer crashes I still have the music safe somewhere. The other thing is that I do love to support great bands and buy cds at their shows when I can but that doesn't happen as much when I can't see a band right away so I shop online instead. If I really like a band I will pre-order a cd, especially if it comes with extra goodies like a DVD of the making of the album (my favorite extra BTW!) or extra tracks (though live versions of songs tends to get redundant).
Keep up the great work guys and check out www.ATOMSTRANGE.com

Getting CDs from the actual band members at shows is cool, still prefer physical CDs for the better quality and the artwork that people put a lot of work in to.
I buy it when i can, but in France, the number of CDs of Metal Band is fucking too little !!!
French music sucks !!!!
Tim - 15 years ago
I usually will buy from iTunes, but when I actually want the physical cd, I usually have to buy from the ban's website, because most stores by me don't stock metal. :/

I will always pick something up from the bands that come to my city(Winnipeg)... always looking to support the local record shop (War on Music, Into the Music, Music Trader) . But when pre-orders are available with some limited items ... call me mark....
brandon - 15 years ago
I need these cds a.s.a.p. so go ahead and tell people the contest is over and mail me my cds please. thank you!
From my favorites - like Machine Head - I preorder instantly through your or the bands site, like I did for Unto The Locust (http://twitter.com/#!/Suuded/status/104316852926287872). Other bands, I hear for the first time on a gig, live, and then buy their CD at their merch booth right there.
If I want to have an older CD, I buy them through mailorder, cause thei offer cool collectibles, specials, or bundles and some I find just by browsing through my local record store. When I got an Amazon voucher I also buy there, mostly stuff I didn't want to buy in the first place, but not knowing how to spend money better, I always find something I think I might take a closer ear at, nevertheless.
James Landsverk - 15 years ago
I buy from the store mostly. Online occasionally. It is always nice to buy the album from the the bands themselves though!
Well, the results doesn't surprise me, if i was in France, i will probably buy it from a local store, but my geographical position, doesn't made me the choice ;)

Tim O'Brien - 15 years ago
I've been waiting for a new Opeth record for years! I'm also looking forward to how Dream Theater's new record sounds with a new drummer.
Dan Svanbom - 15 years ago
I use a variety of musicsources to get the music. Mostly iTunes, Spotify and actual CD:s. However. When it comes to certain bands like Dream Theater and Opeth I tend to buy the CD.
Tracee - 15 years ago
No local music store in my area...thats why I purchase from iTunes or Amazon. That and I dont always want the entire album...just a few of the songs!
Daniel Alves - 15 years ago
I just go to my local store and pay my respect to my great lords Dream Theater!
Ben - 15 years ago
I buy off Ebay, Amazon mktplace, and from barnesandnoble.com. Occasionally I buy at the music stores around here, though. With all three websites I consistently find good used/new CDs under $5.
I'm a huge Dream Theater fan, and I'm interested in Opeth, but haven't listened to them much. Please help out my music collection :D buying music isn't easy when paying off a car and saving for college by mowing lawns...
Levi - 15 years ago
I get my music by almost all these methods but my favorite way is to buy them from the artist at concerts.
Thomas Melllow - 15 years ago
I don't really have a local music store to go to or I would buy there.
Chris - 15 years ago
I typically only buy mp3's now even though I was an avid CD collector at one point. I've used Amazon more than any other provider because they don't have protected formats like iTunes does.
I support underground and local music heavily, so I usually buy from bands at local shows I attend. For big name bands, honestly, I listen to streams, unless I can buy directly from the band (per website, show, etc.) and they get a majority of the profit.
Bob Taunton - 15 years ago
Music is harder and harder to find... si I rely on amazon.ca to help me get what I am looking for... even Wal Mart is the craps for music these days...
Would be nice to win this... I never win anything of this nature!
Good Luck to all!

Joseph Kuehl - 15 years ago
if it's a band i'm really into, i preorder from their website/record label. usually to get all the extras(shirt, usb, record(s), etc.) sometimes, i'll stumble across a band from watching videos on youtube or hear about a band from a friend. then i go on amazon or ebay to look for their cds. there's a local record store where i trade stuff in occasionally, then i'll look around for odds and ends, sometimes they've got some kick ass imports. who knows.
Store pricing is so far away from online prices that it makes it much more difficult to justify buying in stores. Problem then is that you tend to not buy things on the spur of the moment so often...
If a band offers a decent and interesting pre-order bundle on their website, that's an instant purchase right there. Otherwise, it's a case of buying it from whoever's cheapest at the time - spare money is hard to come by these days, so it's important to shop around - the most important thing is that you're buying the band's music.
Gilbert Nano - 15 years ago
I always buy CDs no matter what. I have to have the official physical copy, fuck downloading music. Even if you buy it digitally, its not the same. You can't just bring your mp3 player at a concert for the bands to sign, you bring the CD case instead. I always buy music, put them on my computer, and then put them on my mp3 player. I support my local record store and anyone who buys CDs instead of buying them digitally.
Tracy - 15 years ago
It's nearly impossible to find decent music locally now that music stores have gone the way of video stores...unless I want to try and find something at Walmart or Target (and considering I can't stand rap or hip-hop, then these are not viable options). I like to listen to on-line radio stations for new groups, and if it's something I really like, then I look for their recordings on iTunes or Amazon, so that I can buy it.
Falyssa Mayhew - 15 years ago
It depends. If I can get a digital copy, I'll do that first, because of the convienence, but if I plan to go see the group live, I'll preorder a physical copy.
Donald Hajek - 15 years ago
I buy almost exclusively from Amamzon.com. I used to shop at my local Best Buy,but they have trimmed their cd section down to almost nothing and the remainder is mostly hip hop/rap or pop.I guess I'm old school,I prefer cd's over downloading.I like unwrapping a disc and perusing the cover art and liner notes...
Luís Paiva - 15 years ago

I always try to pre order my music. It helps the artest as well as me get the latest music and helps them with sales and tours.
I like to by CD's when they first come out. I buy discs with extra content on them. Some of the content is really cool.
I have a 200+ CD collection, and that's cool! Long live physical media!
I buy from the store mostly. Online occasionally. It is always nice to buy the album from the the bands themselves though!
Well, the results doesn't surprise me, if i was in France, i will probably buy it from a local store, but my geographical position, doesn't made me the choice ;)
Mostly from Amazon, but I occasionally buy from Itunes & Target!
NEW MACHINE HEAD ALBUM! Damn you Roadrunner you know how to make me answer your questions.
Amazon, Play, or HMV online. DREAM THEATER - \m/
I usually buy from Amazon or iTunes, but if it's a CD I really love I gotta have the physical copy from a music store! I want Trivium's In Waves in my collection, gimme gimme gimme!
I've been waiting for a new Opeth record for years! I'm also looking forward to how Dream Theater's new record sounds with a new drummer.
I use a variety of musicsources to get the music. Mostly iTunes, Spotify and actual CD:s. However. When it comes to certain bands like Dream Theater and Opeth I tend to buy the CD.
No local music store in my area...thats why I purchase from iTunes or Amazon. That and I dont always want the entire album...just a few of the songs!
I just go to my local store and pay my respect to my great lords Dream Theater!
I get my music by almost all these methods but my favorite way is to buy them from the artist at concerts.
I don't really have a local music store to go to or I would buy there.
Music is harder and harder to find... si I rely on amazon.ca to help me get what I am looking for... even Wal Mart is the craps for music these days...
Would be nice to win this... I never win anything of this nature!
Good Luck to all!
I go to bestbuy when I do buy music
if it's a band i'm really into, i preorder from their website/record label. usually to get all the extras(shirt, usb, record(s), etc.) sometimes, i'll stumble across a band from watching videos on youtube or hear about a band from a friend. then i go on amazon or ebay to look for their cds. there's a local record store where i trade stuff in occasionally, then i'll look around for odds and ends, sometimes they've got some kick ass imports. who knows.
record stores and merch tables all the way!
It depends. If I can get a digital copy, I'll do that first, because of the convienence, but if I plan to go see the group live, I'll preorder a physical copy.
Usually buy at a local store. But if you must buy on the internet.
I think a great idea to sell cd's + dvd's with t-shirts, tickets, etc..
