Another slightly different option that I use is to download live concerts from bands' websites after the shows.
Toby Ayers - 15 years ago
I buy music to support bands and other artists a like.
and i go to my near local record shop, itunes, and amazon to buy them
i just recently pre-order Staind New CD and then pick a copy of Theory of a Deadman new CD
so that is what i do and hopefully everyone else does it and does not steal music from the artist that takes there time and efforts to providing such great music to tha fans of there genre
sue butler - 15 years ago
there is nothing like buying music from a local record store! you get to look at all the different albums an artist has released as well as check out some of the other artists both old and new. you just don't get that personal touch from an online site. i guess that i am just a little nostalgic that way!
Adam K - 15 years ago
I get cd's a few different ways, but I find the tent at a show to be the best and most personal way.
Ben Kenney - 15 years ago
I usually buy from my music from my local record store, but sometimes they suck and don't carry the metal I want then I look to Amazon, if I find out that it is in a crappy digi pack then i will buy it as a download cause digi packs suck
Karen - 15 years ago
Dream Theater!
Lawrence Hamilton - 15 years ago
Moo. Machine Head rocks!
DH - 15 years ago
It's stupid that that you are are required to comment to be eligible to get the cds.
Spencer Czapiewski - 15 years ago
I've definitely bought digital downloads and then loved the album so much I went and bought the CD too, just to have a hard copy. Sometimes it's just important to read the lyrics and liner notes! CanNOT wait for new Dream Theater and Opeth!!!
Donovan - 15 years ago
Interesting poll.
Raymond Nesmith III - 15 years ago
I always BUY music I love and have a collection of CD's, LP's and even cassette tapes! I support bands by buying and would love to add more to my collection!!!
Jana - 15 years ago
I think that it depends on the band, artists, and the music on how I purchase my music. If I really love the album I'll buy the recorded album from a record store but if I don't I'll just get it only.
Brett Carruthers - 15 years ago
I still enjoy searching through the stacks in a store and getting physical copies. It's a great set of memories from trips and just growing up in general.
Eric - 15 years ago
Good record stores are so few and far between and Amazon is almost always cheaper. I still like to buy CDs as opposed to digital music, but I can get one sent to my home for less than going to a store 30 miles away that actually stocks the music I like.
Mornothly - 15 years ago
I always buy music in these forgotten old metal stores. Those stores always make me feel something great, as well as the fact that it's convenient (you know, asking about the CD to the store-owner and such). I dont normally buy CDs, I mainly download them from the web, seeing as I dont always have the time to make it to the shops and I would also like to hear the album before I buy it. I have like 30cds so dont worry, I do my part ;p, but I always like it when I buy new CD's, because I have this feeling that its something special. I always listen to the CD like 5 times after I bought it (if it interests me enough), like Ayreon's 01010010101(or whatever), its a great CD and I can listen to the great story multiple times in a row (sometimes whilst reading the inner booklet). Anyway, thats my 2cents
If it is just a song or two I buy it from Amazon.com and download, otherwise I like have the actual physical media from buying the CD from an brick and mortar store.
Chris Ferguson - 15 years ago
I wish I could go to more shows; I used to love buying music directly from bands!
Calvin - 15 years ago
I get my CDs at my local music store. They are like a second family to me.
Bob Voss - 15 years ago
I prefer buying from the band or their label. It cuts out the middle men, and keeps the profit closer to the artist!
Julianne Taylor - 15 years ago
Wish I could afford to buy all of the albums that I want, but since that isn't the case I buy whole albums from local retailers and individual tracks (that I just can't live without) from iTunes.
Charlie Hilgendorff - 15 years ago
I like stores like FYE that let you preview the album before you buy it, but since having kids I don't get to listen to as many of my CD's so I tend to buy from iTunes.
Karmateka - 15 years ago
I still prefer the old school CD. Sometimes the ones I want are hard to find in store so I order online.
Lori Smith - 15 years ago
Can't wait for Dream Theater to return to the Midwest!
Tyler Beehler - 15 years ago
It depends on how much money I have at the time, if I have the extra and I see where I can pre-order and album I almost always do, or if I happen to be at a concert and I have an extra I pay for an album there so I can get it autographed. But I am usually broke, so I wait, save up my money, and wait until I go to Best Buy to buy my music from there because it is unrated. But buying the album is better than just downloading the music off the Internet.
Betty Burks - 15 years ago
We no longer have a record stores here so I have to buy them online now.
Roger M - 15 years ago
I buy from shows as much as possible. Used CD's whenever possible from local shops. I order online as a last resort when I gotta have it. Occasionally I download.
Frank - 15 years ago
Gotta support the bands that make music awesome!!!!
Matthew Medeiros - 15 years ago
I'm big fan of music and acquiring it by paying for it. I've always been that way. I've 800+ tapes under my bed waiting for me to purchase a tape deck. Which I think is happening soon. My CD collection is always growing. I think I passed the 1300 mark recently. I prefer to buy from my local store Newbury Comics. I look forward to going there and just walking around checking out all the music. For the hard to finds I go to Amazon.com. I've had much luck finding everything I want.
Scully - 15 years ago
I try to support the local shops first but with 2 kids it's harder to get there so my backup is Amazon with the occasional used disc off ebay.
wendy jones - 15 years ago
i only buy from a local store will never download
Lennart - 15 years ago
I buy my cd's most of the time in Sweden in lil' stores. But I also buy lots of cd's at shows! Downloading is ok, but it's so much better to have the albums on cd or vinyl!
D.G. - 15 years ago
I prefer to win my cd's, like in this contest. Otherwise, amazon.com for the actual cd
Ken - 15 years ago
I usually buy an album as MP3s from Amazon, unless it is one of my favorites (like Dream Theater). For my favorite bands I will preorder from whatever site the band recommends.
Jeremy - 15 years ago
Good to see so many people doing it the old school way!
Akragth - 15 years ago
Wherever's cheapest! So usually online stores. Digital downloads are nice and all, but can't beat having the actual CD.
Jose Cortez - 15 years ago
Online stores: Amazon or CDUniverse and for Dream Theater always the special editions by the current band's website.
kevin baca - 15 years ago
Fuck Yeah Dream Theater, Machine Head, Opeth, Trivium are the Best!!!!!!
Scott - 15 years ago
If I'm not buying online via Amazon or by preorder on a band's/company's website, then every once a while I hit up Amoeba in Los Angeles and San Francisco as well as Rasputin's in San Francisco...not very many great record stores left these days...
Adam - 15 years ago
I have been using Amazon for this entire year basically. Either mp3 or cds both are great although it's always nice to have that cd just to look at from time to time. :D
I often buy my albums at the local record store, because i like to have a physical copy of the album.
Thomas Anderson - 15 years ago
I prefer buying from a store. I like to have the actual cd rather than just an mp3 download. I'll only use Itunes when I can't find what I'm looking for in my local stores.
Joe - 15 years ago
If it is just released, I go to one of the major stores. If not, I try and support the local record store or buy off ebay.
Russell Sedam - 15 years ago
I buy a lot off of iTunes & other mp3 retailers, but if I like an album enough I will buy the physical cd.
Rhys Andrews - 15 years ago
I like to own the CD. It's worth the extra few dollars to get a tangible item along with the music. Often they include bonus material too, and that's worth it.
So I'll buy from a record store where I can, and purchase online for shipping if I have to.
Kougar Singh - 15 years ago
I always buy physical CDs. They're so much nicer to have than files on a computer.
Maciej - 15 years ago
Records stores are a bit too overpriced. Online shops are great (I order mostly on amazon.co.uk), pre-orders are good for strictly limited editions, I also buy albums on gigs and in second hand shops (vinyls mostly). I like my collection. I'm obsessed with my collection. I adore it. I like to stare at it and at this point I still think it will be my primary focus (as far as culture and entertainment goes) throughout my whole life.
Rising Shadow - 15 years ago
I buy CDs from local stores when I have the money to do so.
Simone Morelli - 15 years ago
I must have the original cds in my hands, and at my local record store I can listen to them if I'm not sure what to buy, so no other choice for me...
Drew Barker - 15 years ago
I wish I could buy from a store, but there are no decent music retailers in my area.
Bret - 15 years ago
I love music
Ely - 15 years ago
Always at my local shop.
The feelings,
when you see your favorite's band new album on the raks waiting for you,
when you hold it in your hand before buying it,
when you shred the wrap while you go home to look inside it,
when you put it in your reader ...
are incomparable.
Christopher - 15 years ago
I have been obsessively collecting music for over 30 years! So I buy it where I find it, local store or online, whoever has it at the best price and condition. I buy CD's & Vinyl but only will buy digital files if I only want a couple of tracks or it's out of print and overly expensive on physical media, or if I can get at least 16/44.1 quality (preferably higher), lossless downloads.
Scott Quinlan - 15 years ago
I used to buy from records stores exclusively, but that's getting more and more difficult. I loved shopping at FYE because they had the best metal CD selection around, but most of those have closed. I'm starting to buy more online- the site of choice is CD Universe.
Neil vaidyanathan - 15 years ago
I usually use grooveshark or spotify but right now I like spotify way more! And I really hope I win the contest!!!
Luis Filipe Lourenço - 15 years ago
I like Vinil and Cd´s for me music from a band it´s all the album, the problem is that people didn´t want all the album but songs and singles.
mrjta53 - 15 years ago
I buy my cd's from Amazon and download from amazon & e-music - it's all too easy to maintain my music addiction!!!
I prefer to support my local music shops like Twist & Shout and Black & Read. Also buy discs at concerts for the up and comers who aren't stocked in shops yet.
Chris - 15 years ago
I buy music any way I can, from band and record label websites, to Amazon, to Ebay.
I buy from my local record stores, yes, actual vinyl records, by the ton.
I buy from garage sales to craigslist and everything in between.
I am obsessed with the collection of music, just ask my wife, it drives her insane.
I been collecting for as far back as I can remember, first it was 8-tracks, then it was vinyl, then
cassettes, then CD's, now were back to vinyl. Any way I can get it, there is hardly a day go by
that I don't but some form of music somewhere.
Curtis - 15 years ago
I tend to buy albums from the band's, or their label's, website. Pre-order tends to happen when they have a limited number of vinyl. I'll use Amazon or iTunes for albums that have been out a while, like when I find a band I like, i'll go get their back catalog.
bevan hirst - 15 years ago
iTunes can get fucked, you can't beat holding your favourite bands album in your hand while you scream the lyrics out to your favourite song...
David B - 15 years ago
I'd be buying two of these albums regardless, so winning would be a great change of fortune. Or maybe, a dramatic turn of events. Fwajajajajajajajajaja.
Donut - 15 years ago
I use Half.com :)
Phil - 15 years ago
Always good to have hard copy of your music & support your local retailer. Fantastic news that Road Runner now has Rush on board !!!!!!!!!!!
Lovin how some people are just honest about the fact that they don't buy it, they download it... :D
Nonetheless, good to see that record shops are still makin the bucks!
DREEEEEAM THEATER!
I get my music from iTunes. The way I usually discover it is by using services like Pandora, MOG, and Rdio. I also use SoundHound when I find a good song on the radio.
Bradley - 15 years ago
I only like having cd's, so I usually buy from record stores mainly because I can listen to it in the car and it helps me with my own performance pieces for year 12 music hahaha
Alysia Vanhie - 15 years ago
I always want a physical copy I hate downloading its more fun to go shopping in store or through websites instead of waiting.. If im at a show then its a must if I don't already have the album! Support music!
Tom Ladouceur - 15 years ago
I either go buy a cd at a cd store or at the band's gig, cause to me there's nothing better than having a physical cd and booklet to look through.
Eliza - 15 years ago
I compare sites and get it where its cheapest unless there's a limited edition.
Sherman L Barker - 15 years ago
I allways buy from Amazon they never let you down, and the prices are great, they send you reminders of music that you listen to, so you will be up to date on what is going on in the recording buisnes,
The shop at my city is not so good, for me is better to buy while im at the gigs, expecially when i'm in europe.
I would like to win the DT album, because I probbly wont buy it, and for sure the MH album I'm gonna buy in brazil, cause they will be touring there, and there will be many offerts, I think. :D
Ole Packschies - 15 years ago
Sadly I basecally have to order online cause I don´t have a local record store anymore and I´d rather support the band as directly as possible or something like Amazon who have great service than some electronics chain who have horrible service, know jack sh*te and fool the unknowing with their seemingly low prices.
Eric Stahl - 15 years ago
I really have not been getting new albums lately. I always will get some at a bands' show, especially local performances.
alessio - 15 years ago
buy cd anywhere,don't like downloading!

Pre-Ordered In Waves. The Vinyl is terrific!
David - 15 years ago
I buy my CD's on PLAY.COM.
MAAAAAAAAACHINE FUUUUUCKIN HEAAAAD !
Marcel - 15 years ago
Even though I listen to music on mp3 I like to own the CD ( ana I also prefer special pre-order editions). I prefer to buy at my local Platomania store and I use the Internet to discover new music. My collection is growing every week but sadly more and more records stores are closing their doors......
Nicolas - 15 years ago
I only buy @ my local music store because I don't have much download capacity and it's always nice to speak with the one who owns the music store and you support a band instead of downloading it illigaly
Steve - 15 years ago
I would buy from a local independent record store but all ours have closed down. I refuse to pay the prices in the local HMV so I either buy from Amazon or (if a self-financed album etc) direct from the band.
Henrique - 15 years ago
I usually buy online, because it's cheaper and easier to find what you want. I keep on buying the physical CDs, I like to hold them, read the booklets and see them on the shelves... :-)
David - 15 years ago
I love supporting my local music store, plus I like to support the bands by buying albums directly from their sites or from their record company's websites, or at their concerts from their record company.
CWGall - 15 years ago
Itunes or mp3 are a lot easier, though you miss out on the sleeves...
MatthewfromMalta - 15 years ago
I buy my Cds wherever I can get my hansd on them. There's just something about owning the disc and the box that's really cool. Plus the booklets are always worth checking out. Sometimes when i'm bored I just pick random CDs off my shelf and read their booklets!

D-8 Before A Dramatic Turn of Event !!! :) Can't wait !
Tyler Davis - 15 years ago
I usually buy my music at my favorite record store. And if I'm at a show and I like the band i'll usually support them by buying their album if they're selling it.
Megan - 15 years ago
I usually buy them from a record store, but if the store doesn't have them, I get money on iTunes, and do it that way, or if I see the band in concert, I buy it there. I like having a physical copy of the cd, in case anything was to happen to my computer and I lost the files, I'd have backup.
Michael - 15 years ago
Machine Fucking Head!
Tim - 15 years ago
I do a little of all of those options. However, my main way of buying music is at the record store, usually the local Newbury Comics. If they don't have an album I really want, I move my search usually to Amazon.com. I only usually use iTunes for individual songs, because like many other people here, I like to have the physical copy. Lastly, I take advantage of online album streams to see if I want to spend my hard-earned money on a specific CD.
Justin - 15 years ago
I love to buy from bands at their shows or preorder from their sites. I'm a sucker for limited edition CD packages!
john - 15 years ago
Actual record stores are on the verge of extinction. Even Ear X-tacy is fighting to stay alive.
Stefan - 15 years ago
Most of my CD'S are from concerts etc. If i really want to be sure i get a new CD i pre-order it, and sometimes i look through de CD'S atr the record store.
Patrik - 15 years ago
I tend to listen to new music via Spotify and if I like it I buy the album as MP3 at some store like iTunes or other MP3 reseller if they are cheaper.
Nathan - 15 years ago
I don't buy music often, but when I want to support a band, I usually get it from a store, maybe in the mall, or at that band's show.
Andrew Hidish - 15 years ago
I like to buy from a local store like Newbury Comics. It's more personal and you discover more music by browsing.
Toby - 15 years ago
I used to buy cds but there getting harder and harder to find so I just buy my music off of itunes since I already have an ipod and I have itunes it just seems like a really convient way for me to get music plus it usually cost more for actual cds because your paying for the case and the shipment of the cd and for the marketing of the actual cd. I would really love to win the cds your giving away though......
Hard copies over digital ANY DAY! Nothing like a good ol' fashioned CD, or even Vinyl!

I compare sites and get it where its cheapest unless there's a limited edition.
Sadly I basecally have to order online cause I don´t have a local record store anymore and I´d rather support the band as directly as possible or something like Amazon who have great service than some electronics chain who have horrible service, know jack sh*te and fool the unknowing with their seemingly low prices.
I really have not been getting new albums lately. I always will get some at a bands' show, especially local performances.
buy cd anywhere,don't like downloading!
Pre-Ordered In Waves. The Vinyl is terrific!
I buy my CD's on PLAY.COM.
MAAAAAAAAACHINE FUUUUUCKIN HEAAAAD !
Even though I listen to music on mp3 I like to own the CD ( ana I also prefer special pre-order editions). I prefer to buy at my local Platomania store and I use the Internet to discover new music. My collection is growing every week but sadly more and more records stores are closing their doors......
I only buy @ my local music store because I don't have much download capacity and it's always nice to speak with the one who owns the music store and you support a band instead of downloading it illigaly
I would buy from a local independent record store but all ours have closed down. I refuse to pay the prices in the local HMV so I either buy from Amazon or (if a self-financed album etc) direct from the band.
I usually buy online, because it's cheaper and easier to find what you want. I keep on buying the physical CDs, I like to hold them, read the booklets and see them on the shelves... :-)
I love supporting my local music store, plus I like to support the bands by buying albums directly from their sites or from their record company's websites, or at their concerts from their record company.
Itunes or mp3 are a lot easier, though you miss out on the sleeves...
I usually buy my music at my favorite record store. And if I'm at a show and I like the band i'll usually support them by buying their album if they're selling it.
I usually buy them from a record store, but if the store doesn't have them, I get money on iTunes, and do it that way, or if I see the band in concert, I buy it there. I like having a physical copy of the cd, in case anything was to happen to my computer and I lost the files, I'd have backup.
Machine Fucking Head!
I love to buy from bands at their shows or preorder from their sites. I'm a sucker for limited edition CD packages!
Actual record stores are on the verge of extinction. Even Ear X-tacy is fighting to stay alive.
Most of my CD'S are from concerts etc. If i really want to be sure i get a new CD i pre-order it, and sometimes i look through de CD'S atr the record store.
I tend to listen to new music via Spotify and if I like it I buy the album as MP3 at some store like iTunes or other MP3 reseller if they are cheaper.
I don't buy music often, but when I want to support a band, I usually get it from a store, maybe in the mall, or at that band's show.
I like to buy from a local store like Newbury Comics. It's more personal and you discover more music by browsing.
