I prefer to buy my Cd's from a independent music store. I like to support the local scene whenever possible. I think I am the last of my friends to still buy Cd's I always have and always will do that. You Rock Roadrunner Records. You guys do it up right. Thanks for all you do.
James F - 15 years ago
iTunes lp is where it's at, get all the stuff you would from the physical cd. For music they don't have I get from the bands in concert. Usually you get deals that way.
Scott - 15 years ago
When I know the band is small and just starting out, I'll buy from their website or at the show. If the band is widely known and has a large release, I'll just pick it up at the store.
Rangerdave - 15 years ago
I look for pre-order specials online first. If there is nothing interesting online, I will buy the CD at Best Buy in its first week of release.

Dream Theater!

I gotta be honest. When I'm into a band, I usually hear them over the internet. Then I buy the album from my local record store. Believe me or not, I have a lot of CDs!
But anyway, thanks RoadRunner for the opportunity!
A cd is just not the musical content, but a total representation of what hte band is trying to communicate with the album. So that includes album artwork, lyrics and general design of the packaging. I LOVE buying new albums from bands I know that catch my eye in stores.
I like to have a real copy of the cd & booklet and usually preorder from bands I know will not disappoint. Amazon is great because it tends to be cheaper & you can schedule preorders to arrive on their release date. I also like buying cds at shows & getting them signed, even if I already have the cd at home \m/
Mark - 15 years ago
I answered the poll with my top 3, however I will add in a #4 below of buying from local record store.
1. Pre-order from band and/or label;
2. Amazon
3. Download from iTunes/Amazon
4. Local record store
Miklo - 15 years ago
I buy cd's lp's and mp3's from all possible places, web, gigs, LocalTalk stores etc
Donny - 15 years ago
I usually buy from local record store. I know its cheaper to buy elsewhere, but I'm making alright money so I like giving back to the community.
Of course you are suppose to go and get your cd at the local store (the old school way, on skateboardif possible). Obviously if you are in super mega urgent need of some eargasmic metal you would go to iTunes or stream it. Eventually most music fans would prefer having their favorit artist's (music) in physical format!
Amber Lynn - 15 years ago
If I have extra money its to Hastings to buy some new CDs I love music, couldn't get through life without it!
Aintzametal - 15 years ago
I'd love to have more copies of my favourite bands, but I can hardly find them in my local store :S so mainly I have to buy'em at bands' shows
Marcin Pietrzyk - 15 years ago
I buy it through polish internet strores mainly rockserwis.pl
David J - 15 years ago
amazon are the easiest way to go about these things
Carlos G. - 15 years ago
I love having hard copies, so I usually buy from the local record stores. If tickets, a patch, a t-shirt or other cool shit like that comes with a pre-order, than I'm sold! Occasionally I will get an iTunes card as a gift, and that's when I buy from iTunes.
Matt - 15 years ago
I usually buy from an online reatailer because I find it difficult finding CDs from most of my fave bands in the high street shops!
Chad Hayes - 15 years ago
Generally, I like to purchase my music either in-store or on Amazon. I like Amazon because, if you preorder something, you can receive it in the mail on release day, and I'm not always able to go to the record shop. But overall, I enjoy the music store experience and being around people that are as nerdy about music as I am. It's really sad that digital distribution and online shops are hurting the small, homey record shops. The atmosphere at the shop is a major part of the music experience.
Karl Shewchuk - 15 years ago
Amazon for the win. Cheep as hell, delivered to your door, and you get a hard copy.
i always buy my cds from a music store, on itunes too but spetialy from a music store... i only want the Machine Head's Unto The Locust!!!!!!!!!
Dan - 15 years ago
I usually buy albums from Itunes to preorder and have it there right when I sign on, but if it's one of my favorite bands I go out and buy the album from the store to actually have a hard copy!

most stores where i live suck -- so its internet order most of the time or at the show
blubadger6 - 15 years ago
I'm an old school album buyer. I like to have the physical disc, case, booklet; all that good stuff. And by local record store, I mean Best Buy, haha
Steve - 15 years ago
I like to order CDs from the artist's website. I also buy from Amazon and other online retailers. I don't go to the local store as much as I used to but I still go 3-4 times a year.
Travis Light - 15 years ago
Almost always buy music from Amazon. Best Buy, Walmart, and Hastings all routinely charge more for the same music. If a deluxe-type version of a cd is offered with a few bonus tracks for a few dollars extra, I'll buy it. But, as much as I love Dream Theater, the super-mega-ultraluxe edition of A Dramatic Turn is a *little* ridiculous. I've funded 4 trips to see those guys in 4 different cities totaling to 7100 roundtrip miles (I live in the middle of nowhere) but $106 for an album is a bit much.
Emmet - 15 years ago
I always buy music online from iTunes, Play.com, or CD-WOW. I'll get it from the bands/record companies website if there is an added bonus (e.g., extra song). Sometimes I'll buy in HMV, if the price is right.
Virginia - 15 years ago
I pre-order from the band's or label's website or just buy it from the band at a show.
Andrew - 15 years ago
All about purchasing digitally. I travel around the world a lot, so physical mediums aren't convenient any more.
MB - 15 years ago
If its an album I really want, I will pre-0rder from the band's website, which, in many cases, redirects me to Amazon or another online retailer. If a band releases a single off of an upcoming album and its only available from iTunes, then I will download it from there. If it's not pre-release stuff, I will look at Amazon or any other online retailer for the best price. I still love looking at the album art that comes with CD's or vinyl, so downloading an entire album in digital format isn't for me. I love going to record stores like Vintage Vinyl or Slackers although their prices may not be the best.
Christopher Matthew Jones - 15 years ago
I usually purchase new music, on release day if I can, at my local record store. It has been a very enjoyable past-time for me because it's fun to get out to the shop, look around at all the awesome music. And I love to buy new albums by my favorite bands (two of which being Dream Theater and Opeth :)) on release day to help get them into the Billboard and to be on the wavelength of pure excitement that comes with a new album coming out. All good for all involved!!!
Daniel J - 15 years ago
I usually pre-order albums I want in advance from the band's website.
Scott - 15 years ago
I'll buy albums on itunes if I get an itunes card. I still like buying CD's.

amazon is typically the easiest, but i like supporting my local record store. Using label websites can get you some cool extras though \m/
Robert Butts - 15 years ago
I by my music from amazon or from a local store if it isn't priced to high like at FYE.
Derek B - 15 years ago
Depends on the band for me, honestly. There are some groups that I prefer to have the physical copy of the music, most others I get digitally.
dale schmucker - 15 years ago
itunes. easy and i can listen before i buy them. and I want to rant for a second. I am tired of greatest hits packages (poison, motley crue). 20 greatest hits packages is enough already bret!!!!!!
Davidmk - 15 years ago
My local record store , also online retailers & from a bands website/label if they have a special deal .
Robert Coot - 15 years ago
only online as you can get a good deal, although have bought from members of the band before
Rob - 15 years ago
I try to buy from the band if possible, knowing it puts the most amount of money in their pocket
Mike - 15 years ago
We used to have great record shops here in town, but they all closed up after the big retailers came to town. Occasionally I'll buy CDs from them, but most of my music cones from iTunes now.
Tim - 15 years ago
I'll try to buy the special editions right from the band if I can. Otherwise, from amazon or Best Buy for an album with artwork I'd like to keep, and everything else digitally.
Jordan - 15 years ago
I typically buy a special editon hard copy of bands that I admire, but if I'm tryin out a new band, I use iTunes. Surprisingly, Roadrunner has a lot of my favorite bands so I usually am getting special editions of their albums!
and i try to order from label's site or own band's website
Ted - 15 years ago
I admittedly download most of my music, but it's because I have no job at the moment. And on occasion I spring for the free downloads on iTunes or Amazon.com or the exclusives from them. And by record store, I meant Best Buy, though it's only because the have the good sales. Once I have money I'm probably just going to go to Newbury Comics for everything.
Mitchel Kirton - 15 years ago
I prefer to have albums on CD, digital media is far too finicky right now and I like my collection so far.
I usually buy from a store when I'm in town and have the cash.
Joseph - 15 years ago
Used to buy iTunes, it seems Amazon MP3 store is a little cheaper, but I do usually compare the two before buying. Don't remember the last time I bought a physical CD
ron jones - 15 years ago
i will always buy bands cds can't stand downloading i must have the real thing
85-90% of the time, I'll buy (or pre-order) the album on Amazon mainly due to the ease of purchase and all that.
The rest of the time, I usually order from the artist's site/store, especially if it's a limited or special edition release.
I'd buy much more directly from the bands IF they came around my home town more often :p
Petr - 15 years ago
I usually buy or preorder CDs/DVDs from online stores (mostly www.cdwow.com, www.thehut.com). Sometime I buy direct from bands websites. I don't buy music in digital formats (mp3 etc.)
Meghan Chavez - 15 years ago
I usually always preorder albums, of I stream them and if I like them I get them off Amazon.
Oelvis - 15 years ago
i love the vinyl + digital download combo, so i have the benefit of my thorens and also is my music still mobile as i need it to be mobile.
I love to buy music at shows, but i don;t like the fact that bands don;t sell their cd's all teh times at the shows. (why is this anyways, has this something to do with distributer deals?)
Daivinyl - 15 years ago
I download music mostly from Amazon as it reasonably cheap but I prefer to have a CD copy so often get stuff off Ebay especially back catalogue classics.
Dale Mayer - 15 years ago
I still like buying CDs. I usually buy em online since I can avoid tax and shipping, and they're cheaper online anyway.
Daivinyl - 15 years ago
I download music mostly from Amazon as it reasonably cheap but I prefer to have a CD copy so often get stuff off Ebay especially back catalogue classics.
Mike Hoffman - 15 years ago
I try to buy the special edition from the bands site, but there are times that iTunes has a better deal. So you take what you can get I guess. In my mind as long as you are buying the album from the band and going to as many shows as you can, you are a fan and you are giving your support.
Ghill - 15 years ago
There are not many good record store in my town so I often command straight from the label
I always buy hard copies, usually CDs. I'm a record collector and I hope that others my age will also continue to buy from the artist/label rather than stream or download for free otherwise there will be no more decent bands. Being a musician myself I am angry by those who think that music should be made free or devalued by being sold at prices that are less than a pint of beer - it's a work of art and should be treated with respect!
Brent Bach - 15 years ago
I buy at the local record store, or Best Buy, WalMart, Meijer, if something older they don't have I buy from Amazon, always buy at least $25 worth so as to get free shipping, I'll buy used if I can get it anywhere else.
Omar - 15 years ago
I usually download the album for free, give it a listen and if I like it I buy it... Most of the times from a local record store, and if I can't find it there from iTunes.
Tommy - 15 years ago
Most of the time, I buy CDs from the local record store.
Have tons of CDs and download stuff from Amazon and emusic (will stop emusic soon though) and hate iTunes (too expensive and an arm of the major labels)!!
Jose - 15 years ago
I hate waiting for cd's to arrive, I usually go for the local record store
Arnaud - 15 years ago
I'ld rather buy on the internet, because this is often cheaper, but I actually don't own a credit card, and my parents are against web-shopping (payment security... -_-'). Otherwise, I'ld really love to win those CD's!! 2011 must have!
Sam - 15 years ago
Go to the record store and buy an album. Besides, it means a whole much more to go out to your record store, with hard earned cash, find a CD you enjoy/wanna listen to, and paying for it than going online to buy an mP3. Besides, music's is more enjoyable when you have the product in your own hands instead of on a file in your computer.
George F - 15 years ago
I'm surprised to see Local Record Store in the lead considering most of these types of CD shops charge much more for a record/CD than Amazon for example who I mostly buy from. You can also save a huge amount by looking at the used section they have for just about every new CD you look at or want to buy. The only time I ever even think about buying from a local vendor is during the first week an album comes out. Usually a new album is on sale or has some sort of special attached to it during it's first week of release.
Lassedrengen - 15 years ago
I still prefer to go and buy a CD ... like to pick up things I don't really know and go home, put it on the stereo and listen to the new tunes.
In my opinion, CD's still kick arse!
Evan - 15 years ago
I'm surprised that almost 30% of people still buy from a store rather than online...
James - 15 years ago
I never use digital outlets due to the lower quality in the music, and not to forget there isn't the experience of opening and holding the physical package. So I always buy the LP, SACD, or CD from a local store if possible or from a website. It unfortunately tends to be that the internet has better prices, but I'll never buy a fake copy version though; It's gotta be the real deal because any true fan or music lover will buy the music. None of that the music if free for everyone bullshit.
Mikkel Broholt - 15 years ago
I buy all my music online, mostly because it's easiest, and buying from amazon is a lot cheaper than in my country.
Also I really enjoy bundles, those I can't get enough of.
Lucian - 15 years ago
I much prefer a record store to online shopping.
Jason Good - 15 years ago
I try to buy from the store on the day of release. For more obscure titles which I know they won't carry, I'll preorder from Amazon.
Andy - 15 years ago
I buy a lot of music. When I buy new, it's usually from Amazon.com, because most local stores have poor selections. I love reasonably priced special editions, but I am growing tired of the trend toward high-priced extravagent boxed sets. I want to buy all of the music made available by my favorite artists, but I really don't care about giant boxes and books to fill up my shelves. Roadrunner, please do your part to cut that out of the industry. Give me a reasonably-priced way to purchase the instrumental tracks for the new Dream Theater album without having to buy a copy of the album on vinyl and a branded turntable slip mat and a giant box to hold it all. It's all about the music, right? Well, it is for me. I know you can't do anything about the new Pink Floyd boxes or the U2 Achtung Baby boxed set, but please try to talk Steven Wilson out of these shenanigans in the future.
Michelle - 15 years ago
It's sad that our last cool local store went out of business. I guess when I finally find a band I want to listen to, I'll ask the former owner where he's getting his cds. I'll buy cds at a show, for sure. Digital i snot for me. heh, heh... she said snot...
Mauro - 15 years ago
I love buying cd's, Only way to support an artist for me since bands don't come to play near me :(
Rachael Comeaux - 15 years ago
I usually buy cds from Amazon, Target, Best Buy or from the bands at shows. I much prefer cds to mp3s. I still dig boxed sets though I know there aren't many out there anymore.
:)
Amanda - 15 years ago
I buy my cds from bands or record stores and I'm a music freak. Music is my life because what ever I'm feeling that day and the music i listen to goes with each mood i'm in. IF i'm pissed off I listen to heavy music and if im sad i listen to slow songs.
Camden - 15 years ago
It depends on whether the band is selling their music for less at the show or not
Brian - 15 years ago
If we're talking about a band I'm a big fan of, I'll preorder the music from the band's website. If it's a band I'm only first hearing about and I like what I hear, I'll either go to a local store or Amazon.
benny gilman - 15 years ago
i usually buy cds at record stores because i am a true believer that if you are a fan you should support that and i buy online if i cant find it anywhere else.metal is my passion and it will always be that way with me and just so everybody knows this roadrunner records is probably the best record label out there hands down
Best way is always at a show, maybe after a great surprise, or at a label stand of a festival!
Mike - 15 years ago
We need a roadrunner streaming service!!
Michael - 15 years ago
I buy LOADS of albums, I have literally hundreds! I buy some every day! I NEED the physical copy, and I LOVE special editions and extras. I NEVER download, but I may listen to a sample on YouTube. The place where I buy it from depends on the artist and the price. First, I look for what I want at my local mall (no record shops in Cyprus) but usually it's overpriced. So if it's popular enough to be available at the mall, and cheap enough for me to buy it, I buy it from there. If it's not popular enough, I order it from the Internet, mainly from Amazon.com or Play.com (fuckin' great, free shipping!) and sometimes directly from the band or from their Label (Nuclear Blast has a nice online store). I would love to buy from a local record store to support the local economy, but there's not even one, and I mean not even one, left in Cyprus. Really sad.
So it's basically three options; Mall, Online Retailer or Label/Band site. I love buying CDs and Vinyl and the fact that it's hard to find them on my island doesn't stop me from finding a way to get my hands on those precious little pieces of art. \m/
Buying from bands at the shows are the best way to support them!
Grant Miller - 15 years ago
Local record store or new/used on Amazon. I avoid digital at all costs unless it's lossless, so iTunes isn't really viable for me.
Patricia Spell - 15 years ago

Good luck to all who enter!

I try to buy the special edition from the bands site, but there are times that iTunes has a better deal. So you take what you can get I guess. In my mind as long as you are buying the album from the band and going to as many shows as you can, you are a fan and you are giving your support.
I buy at the local record store, or Best Buy, WalMart, Meijer, if something older they don't have I buy from Amazon, always buy at least $25 worth so as to get free shipping, I'll buy used if I can get it anywhere else.
I usually download the album for free, give it a listen and if I like it I buy it... Most of the times from a local record store, and if I can't find it there from iTunes.
Most of the time, I buy CDs from the local record store.
Have tons of CDs and download stuff from Amazon and emusic (will stop emusic soon though) and hate iTunes (too expensive and an arm of the major labels)!!
I hate waiting for cd's to arrive, I usually go for the local record store
I'ld rather buy on the internet, because this is often cheaper, but I actually don't own a credit card, and my parents are against web-shopping (payment security... -_-'). Otherwise, I'ld really love to win those CD's!! 2011 must have!
I still prefer to go and buy a CD ... like to pick up things I don't really know and go home, put it on the stereo and listen to the new tunes.
In my opinion, CD's still kick arse!
I'm surprised that almost 30% of people still buy from a store rather than online...
I buy all my music online, mostly because it's easiest, and buying from amazon is a lot cheaper than in my country.
Also I really enjoy bundles, those I can't get enough of.
I much prefer a record store to online shopping.
I try to buy from the store on the day of release. For more obscure titles which I know they won't carry, I'll preorder from Amazon.
It's sad that our last cool local store went out of business. I guess when I finally find a band I want to listen to, I'll ask the former owner where he's getting his cds. I'll buy cds at a show, for sure. Digital i snot for me. heh, heh... she said snot...
I love buying cd's, Only way to support an artist for me since bands don't come to play near me :(
I usually buy cds from Amazon, Target, Best Buy or from the bands at shows. I much prefer cds to mp3s. I still dig boxed sets though I know there aren't many out there anymore.
:)
I buy my cds from bands or record stores and I'm a music freak. Music is my life because what ever I'm feeling that day and the music i listen to goes with each mood i'm in. IF i'm pissed off I listen to heavy music and if im sad i listen to slow songs.
It depends on whether the band is selling their music for less at the show or not
If we're talking about a band I'm a big fan of, I'll preorder the music from the band's website. If it's a band I'm only first hearing about and I like what I hear, I'll either go to a local store or Amazon.
i usually buy cds at record stores because i am a true believer that if you are a fan you should support that and i buy online if i cant find it anywhere else.metal is my passion and it will always be that way with me and just so everybody knows this roadrunner records is probably the best record label out there hands down
Best way is always at a show, maybe after a great surprise, or at a label stand of a festival!
We need a roadrunner streaming service!!
Local record store or new/used on Amazon. I avoid digital at all costs unless it's lossless, so iTunes isn't really viable for me.
I usually buy through band or label websites. You can get great deals and extra's too!!
I buy from the record stores because a lot of times i tunes does not have what i am looking for.
I am also excited for DT's new album with Mike Mangini.
always looking for good deals
Interested to hear the new Dream Theater album without Portnoy.
I don't have a lot of time to hear music.....but can't lose Dream Theater releases, in fact I've pre-ordered the limited edition and can't wait to have it in my hands.
